Do I have to play a sport to attend USNA. I can play football and b ball but I am more of an ROTC kind of guy

There are activities outside the normal realm things generally considered to be "sports" that are available to midshipmen; eg, rifle, pistol, sailing at various levels, YP Squadron, etc. They all qualify as a sport, so those participating are fulfilling that requirement. Some of them should appeal to an ROTC guy.

jotis,

If your question is referring about playing sports as an Admissions requirement, consider that about 88-90% of each class participates in varsity athletics. If you are one of those ~10%, I would HIGHLY suggest finding another way to demonstrate that you are physically fit -- i.e. JV sports, participate at local sports club, run monthly road races, participating in league sports, etc. Additionally, your Candidate Fitness Assessment will also be looked at more closely.

If you are referring to while at USNA, there are two good posts above.

Rifle is a sport, according to the NCAA, NAAA, and the olympic committee. At all SA's save USMMA it's considered a D1 sport and is competed at the same level as football, bball, lacrosse, etc. Definitely not 'available' to Midshipmen (the same way football isn't), and it's far past the level of YP squadron or pistol.

As far as resume building is concerned, the absence of a sport will be noted. Even if you're on multiple teams in your JROTC unit (I assume JROTC), it will only be weighted once in the application. If you have the opportunity to join a sport in HS, do so.

I plan to do the rifle team in my ROTC unit. Will that count to me getting accepted. I really wanna be in the military. I guess I'll play football junior year!?. Am I ok for fitness. I weigh 143 and I am 5'8.?

You're well within the height/weight specifications if that's what you mean. As far as fitness is concerned, I'd recommend looking at the CFA averages like usnabgo08 touched on. See how you compare.

That's great you're planning on doing rifle in JROTC. However, in all reality, you probably couldn't justify it as a sport. You'd more than likely be shooting 3P sporter air rifle. Go to google images and type in "NCAA rifle". That's the sport.

Should I be on the rifle team till graduate and be on the football team junior and senior year?

You should do whatever you enjoy doing that enhances your application. Doesn't have to be football, which can be competitive to get a slot. Could be track, cross country, soccer. Of course it also depends on what athletics you have access to via your school or elsewhere.

In terms of the USNA application process, think of high school sports as a box that needs to be checked on the application. A yes is a better answer than no. A very high percentage of midshipman played some sort of high school sport. Most Mids are former jocks or jocketts ' in high school. It shows that you can successfully be part of a team. If you can't check that box, the rest of your application has to that much stronger to overcome that minor deficiency.

The only added bonus you get for playing a high school sport is if you are a team captain. You have shown leadership abilities. There is no bonus to playing multiple high school sports.

My last bit of advice, it can be any varsity sport. Pick a sport that has no cuts to make a team. Could be track, swimming, tennis or golf. Depends on the high school.
