Hi everyone, I am starting my freshman year of college soon and I just realized that I want to be an infantry officer in the Army. I came to this realization after talking with my grandfather(an infantry officer in WWII). I have some questions about a 3 year scholarship. First, this realization hit me after the deadline to apply for a four year scholarship passed and after I signed up for classes so I could not register for ROTC as a non scholarship cadet. So my question is do I have to be in ROTC as a freshman to be awarded a 3 year scholarship? I have already checked and the unit at my school is not a very big one. Is there a way to register for ROTC in the second semester? Will I be an MSII my sophomore year if I join then(scholarship or no scholarship I plan to)? Thanks everyone.

Seems to me you are well prior to the date at which you can add/drop classes. You might want to consider juggling your schedule to include ROTC now. Talk to the cadre. If you plan to go this route you probably need to speak with them to be included in any ROTC freshman orientation activities, if any.

I was thinking the same thing. If you walked into my office today you would be enrolled in Army ROTC class before you left. If you want to be an infantry officer go stand on someones desk until they let you take the class. I can't imagine there is an Army ROTC battalion out there that wouldn't sign you up in a heartbeat. I'm going to be spending the next three weeks on campus looking for any freshmen with a heartbeat that wants to take the class. I'm sure there is someone just like me on your campus...find her/him.

Bump. Also, chances for an 3 year Army ROTC scholarship with these stats: -HS GPA-3.25, SAT- 1100(M and CR), PT- haven't taken it yet but I know I can max out the run and come close on sit ups, push ups will be the hard part; but, realistically, I think I can score around 270. I know these stats aren't particularly impressive, but I also know the unit at my school is small and not very popular.

I couldn't say. But regardless of stats you would need to join and work hard at ROTC in any case. It might very well all come down to the competition you're up against at your school.

The good news is that your HS stats are meaningless at this point. The on-campus scholarships are entirely dependent on what you are doing at college. The bad news is that we cannot tell you how many 3-year scholarships may or may not be available because it depends upon a whole lot of factors all of which are beyond your control.

The best measures of whether you are competitive for a scholarship is showing up every day, busting your tail in all ROTC endeavors, having the top GPA, and being a good teammate (leadership is about making the team work better). The PMS will find you if you are at the top of your class and if s/he has any scholarships you will get it.

Have you contacted the cadre yet? I haven't heard of a school that won't allow you to take MS1 class. Granted they may have a "requires the approval of instructor" flag set. Typically that is because they want to talk to you about the program first. If you are serious about the program, you should have no problem getting in the MS1 class. Check the scheduling to make sure you have no conflicts.

Do you want to be an Army Officer, or do you want a scholarship???
You don't need a scholarship to be in Army ROTC (I'm sure you already know that). You can't be an Army ROTC commissionee unless you enroll in Army ROTC. You don't need a minimum GPA or PT score to take the class, so talk to the ROO, get signed up for the class and do the best you can in class, PT, and the ROTC program. Simple as that. You may get a scholarship offer and you may not, but you won't if you aren't in the class.

Last question: do I have to do DoDMERB if I plan on joining as a non scholarship cadet

You will not do your DodMerb physical until it's time to contract. If you receive a scholarship it will be then, if not you will need it prior to the beginning of your junior year (the soonest you can contract without a scholarship, if not SMP).
