Rental cars in Denver area

The way around this is simple. Just log onto their website www.expresstoll.com before you go out there and register as a user. You can request that they mail you a transponder and you can load $50 (or whatever) onto the account with a credit card. There is no charge for them to send you the transponder. (They'll even give you an extra $5 toll credit when you sign up.) The money on the account never expires so you can keep the transponder for the whole four years that your kid is at the Academy. If you have the transponder on the dash of your rental car then the sensors in the toll readers pick that up and you'll get no bill from the rental car company. The toll fee is less for vehicles with the transponder, also.

We gave our son the transponder after he graduated and he still uses it occasionally when he goes back to COS.

Quick fix for this is to go into GPS settings and check avoid toll. Unless you're in a big hurry and have to use toll, the fastest alternate route should get you to your destination without the hassle of a toll bill.

A lot has changed since they removed the actual tolls. MOST of the rental car companies offer a small additional charge on the rental, where they simply pay the tolls for you instead of passing it on to you. My family came out to visit duing my son's graduation from the academy last year. They paid like an extra $15 or $20 a day on the rental fee, (Not sure of the exact amount, but it wasn't huge). This covered ALL tolls, as many times as they used it. I use the E470 a lot. In a week's period, they probably drove the E-470 (END TO END) at least 4 times. It was covered. So the FIRST thing I recommend is to check with the car rental company. Afterall; they're the ones who are getting the TOLL Bill. Not You. Each rental car company is different. Check with them first before you do anything. See what their policy is. Some already have transponders and you pay them $10-$15 (Or whatever a day) part of the rental and it's in the car. Call them first.

In my four years traveling to DEN I have used the TOLL road once in a rental car. I paid a fee for each rental day (even though I use the Toll road once), and I received a separate bill from a third party for the toll fees.

Guess each rental car company is different. The 2 my family used, they never received any bills. Like I mentioned, 1 simply charged an extra fee (If you wanted it) and they covered all tolls. The second did similar, but put the transponder in the car. Neither had extra charges.

How do you know if a rental car has a transponder already? It would seem that if you put yours in a car that has one, bad things would happen. Is the transponder mounted in the windshield, as it is in Texas? If so, it would be quite obvious if it has one or not.
