Hey folks, right now my status is applicant, as I submitted on the 19th....how soon should I expect that to turn to candidate? And if for some reason I'm not deemed candidate material, will I find out? And is it the end of the line?

Candidate status is granted based upon a few criteria:

a. Recruited athlete, coaches want full evaluation done ASAP. This is a "conditional candidacy." Requires nomination at later date.
b. "Something" in your package, or it's overall strength, triggers USAFA/RRS (admissions) to "tag" you as a candidate. Again, this is "conditional" and requires nomination at a later date.
c. You qualify for a Presidential Nomination. This is an automatic candidacy.
d. You receive a nomination from any MOC: normal candidacy.

There are a few other "small and unique" categories.

Bottom line: candidates must have nominations or be "tagged" by admissions/athletics for "review." Realize this: no "candidate" will be admitted without an official nomination. That's the law.

So...even if you've completed everything in your package...you may or may not be a candidate. HOWEVER...if you're in the "early review" grouping. You have been "tagged" by RRS as I described earlier so you should see a change soon.

Thanks for that i guess me being a recruited athlete coupled qith being qualifiesd for a presidential nomination made it quick

Is it fairly common to become a "candidate" based off package strength? Or do you need to have a REALLY strong package and test scores? Also, do candidates get their apps looked at first?

No "package gets looked at" by the admissions board for selection until the entire package is complete. And then ONLY if the package is a qualified candidate.

Non-candidates aren't being looked at simply because the academy won't have them "tagged" to an ALO or to a Form 4060 requirement since they're aren't candidates.

"In the past" candidates files, once completed, went to the next board that met. This year...I haven't heard precisely how the process will progress but I think it will be like this: nothing really will happen until 1 November.

There "may" be a few folks reviewed, and possibly even given LOA's, prior to 1 November...my guess, and it's only a guess, is that those people will be HEAVILY recruited athletes that are also superb "academic" candidates as well.

Again...until USAFA/RRS sends out word to the ALO's, this is only my "guesstimate."

Ok don't understand this. Day one my dd said candidate and incomplete, now it says complete, so it's never said anything else. So did we miss something.

Probably not.

This is a "weird/confusing/irritating/nervous" process. I hated it as a candidate in 1977...and again in 1978. And I don't much love it as an ALO; and I've been an ALO since 1994.

However...it works. Seems crazy, and it frustrates folks, but it works. Some folks think we should be like USCGA; national competition, no nominations, etc. And there are times I think that might be nice...but not yet. It may eventually go there however...with the process rooted in 10 USC I'm doubtful.

Back to your DD...did she do all her paperwork, get that all submitted? If so, then "complete" makes sense. If not...I'd call the counselor that was assigned to her.

Yes paper work all in, finished it in 15 days. But she most everything already since she had already done the usna app. But afa is her number one. She also did the navy and af ROTC apps already and almost finished with cg. She worked all summer for our moc as a intern. Her direct boss was the person in charge of nominations. She didn't do the internship for that reason she got it because of her role in student govt. but it didn't hurt to make friends. Now she is onto the six college early apps she is working on.
