My son just received his appointment to the USMA! It came as a surprise because he had not received an LOA.

He has also applied to USNA and USAFA and has not yet determined his first choice. Should he notify the admissions officers at the USNA and the USAFA that he has received an appointment to the USMA?

First, CONGRATULATIONS TO HIM!!! That's outstanding!!!

Second...yes, have him tell both his ALO and his Blue/Gold officer that he's received an appointment to USMA. I can guarantee they're going to ask: "So...you gonna accept it?"

He needs to be ready to answer that, honestly.

IF USMA is his first choice, he should tell them that. However, if it's not; one of the other two are, then he should immediately call his ALO/B&G officer and tell them that he's received this appointment but really wants the other one...

I'm not saying they can do a thing to help more than they have, but I know if one of my candidates called about this...I'd be speaking with folks at USAFA about him...to see what they're thinking re: appointment for him.

Just my 10 cents worth.

Again, my congratulations to him!!! :thumb:

Also, the above is proof that an LOA IS NOT NECESSARY!! As those of us involved in the admissions process keep assuring you, most successful candidates don't get LOAs. And many of them hear early.

LOAs are a strange thing. Although they are typically given to the most highly qualified candidates, that doesn't mean that all of the most highly qualified candidates get them.

Also, at this point in the process, most remaining candidates won't get LOAs no matter how well qualified they are. They'll just get appointments. (Again, not saying no one gets LOAs this late, just that it's not as common).

Hey USNA1985, out of curiosity, did you get a LOA?

^^^^^^

In my day, there were no LOAs. So, no. They are a relatively new phenomenon (well, relatively new for someone who applied 27 years ago:eek:).

They were introduced for two reasons: (1) to combat the Early Action/Early Decision programs and (2) to provide assurances earlier in the process to highly qualified candidates who often have many offers on the table.

Only 27 years ago...

Child...

Nothing yet

Hello all my son received nominations for both USMA and USNA and an appointment to USCGA. Of course my choice is USCGA but he wants one of the other two. He has received nominations for both and letters from both stating he is academically qualified but we have not received anything else and these were received close to a month ago. Im a bit worried that he will not get an appointment and would like to know asap. Not knowing is driving us nuts. We just want to know one way or another so that we can move on. This process is stressful for these boys and girls and especially parents. LOL

Driverainv, congratulations to your son! The USCGA appointment is sweet - and he knows already - wow! Your comments about waiting to hear about the other two academies remind me of my son's wait. It is hard to watch them wait, isn't it? Believe me you are not alone in your wait. It is part of the process and a good learning experience for parents.

Here is how I would have written your comment two years ago. (Please forgive my edit.)

Good luck to you all as you wait. Be .

Most appointments come out in march, don't worry, I haven't even heard back from my nomination sources yet

Confused

My son spoke to his appointed LT. He was initially offered NAPS But he changed his school schedule adding pre calc and other AP classes. He then sent them his first and second marking period report cards showing that he excelled in Pre Calc. The LT then withdrew his NAPS appointment and re introduced him to the board with his updated academics. The LT told him that he passed the board by one vote. Now, does this one vote mean scholastically qualified or accepted into the acacdemy. Thats how it was left. please advise.

Could your son call his LT and ask? If it means an appointment then he will hear within a week, most likely.

I am with Antoinetter, call the LT.

My wild guess is that he was academically qual. I say this because it wouldn't be a 1 vote deal for an appt...1 pt maybe, but not 1 vote, since it is a WCS system, everybody scores him and the points are tallied...not the votes

Actually, it could very easily be a 1 vote deal for an appointment. The WCS is a huge part of it but the board does review and discuss each candidate, moving points around as warranted based on subjective point values. For instance, two candidates from different HS's with the exact same GPA and test scores and class rank - will they get the same score on the academic side? Possibly - but more likely the board will now look at the school profile of their HS and the classes they have taken and re-work the WCS to better match the situation. Similar situation for review of your essays. A computer does not do that - the board does. Although each candidate does get a WCS they are not reduced entirely to numbers - if it were just the numbers there would be no need for a board to meet. But an appointment is much much more than the numbers and the process simply cannot be readily explained.

Each SA board is a little different but for the most part your file goes before the board and is openly discussed. Often your admissions rep (or coach if an athletic recruit) presents your file to the board, this can be a very brief verbal comment listing particulars (test scores etc) or he/she may elaborate depending on what they see in your file or know of you from your ALO/MALO/B&G interview or even if you have personally talked to them. The board listens to the admissions rep and looks at your file, reads the essays etc and then the board votes.

Yes, it is absolutely possible to make it by one vote.
