I apologize in advance if this has recently been covered, but after searching I could not find the info I was looking for. After two years in AFROTC and being dis-enrolled due to not making SFT (grades too low), DS was encouraged (by the detachment commander) to consider joining AROTC. He just completed the orientation for new AROTC students, and is happy with this change in direction. He will be starting with the Army as a second-year student which is what he wanted, as it will give him the opportunity to retake a couple of classes he did not do well in. So, here is the question: What is the soonest he could become contracted? Thank you.

Can't tell you the earliest. Perhaps someone else can chime in. I can tell you that the latest would be within the year. He will have to be contracted to proceed after this year.

He is starting as an MSII cadet. The soonest (and only time) he can contract is at the beginning of his MSIII year, or next fall. Assuming he performs well this year, and there are available contracts, he should be good to go. Welcome to the Army!

Keep in mind, that unlike the Air Force, he may well commission into the Guard or Reserves if his GPA is too low to qualify for active duty. I'm sure the cadre covered that, but it's an important distinction to note.

Contracting will depend on his performance in the Army program as well as his grades and PT score.

Depending on how low his grades were, he may or may not be contracting at all. We didn't allow 4 of our cadets to contract based on either grades or PT scores last year. They simply wouldn't have been competitive on any level.

I expect he will do well on the PT test this Wednesday. He should also bring his GPA up (he is currently retaking a class he didn't do well in). I believe he was just under a 3.0 the first semester of last year, and then dropped even lower the second semester down to around a 2.7 (ouch). If he can bring it up over 3.0, with a good PT score, do you think he would be competitive?

Thank you Jcc123. I am very hopeful that he will find his niche with the Army and will do much better.

This is coming from my experience when I did GBR because I tracked contracting missions between class years from what I have seen contracting missions are often full by the time MSII starts. Obvious there are exceptions such as green to gold or nursing but do not assume he will get contracted. It's not as easy as his AF cadre put it.

3.0 GPA unless he is STEM is really borderline for AD and he will have a bit of a learning curve coming in. Tell him to soak up cadre knowledge and focus on academics.

I expect he will also need to demonstrate his involvement, determination, and when given opportunities (or making them) his leadership.
