LDAC moves to Ft. Knox

Just saw that CC announced that LDAC will be at Ft. Knox starting the summer of 2014. End of a long run at Ft. Lewis.

Of course we're bummed because we live not far from Ft. Lewis and could attend the Graduation.

I guess cadets won't be worrying about rainy LDAC's, now they need to load up on sunscreen and Gatorade.

Interesting move. I mean it makes sense considering CC is at Fort Knox but I do not know how they are going to work out all of the medical consults. It might seem behind the scenes to most people on here but the medical component of LDAC (and not just for aviation) is HUGE. Without having Madigan we couldn't have completed the mission. Besides medical assets there a host of other resources that Knox will not have to support the cadet mission.

Ft. Lewis summer weather is 1000000x better than Knox.

Oh well, I never have to go there again :shake:
 
Jcleppe, I could not find this on the CC website. Just curious where did you find the info? Thanks for posting.
 
I think it depends on perspective. Back in the dark ages I did Advanced Camp at Lewis and was Basic Camp Cadre at Knox for 3 years (LRC and Tac Officer).

Between the rain, skeeters and starting several days in field jackets and gloves in July, I found Knox much more to my liking. I was an Armor officer so that probably accounts for my partiality:shake:

I can't speak to the state of the post today, but I found the Knox infrastructure (ranges, field training areas, classrooms) more conducive to running a camp than Lewis since it was used for BCT at the time. Again, no idea of the conditions there today.
 
well, the constrained Budget hits again! I wonder if PT scores are more condusive to Ft. Lewis-McCord and it's moderate weather, or Ft. Knox, where if I remember correctly mean mid-day temps in July and August are clost to 90 degrees F.

I think this change has been in the works ever since they moved CC to Ft. Knox, since this is where they do LTC.

I would imagine the APFT will be done early am, before the real heat is upon them.

I feel sorry for the fist group that goes through, I bet there will be a lot of bugs to work out.

The Battalions in the PNW have alway used the fact that they train at Ft. Lewis as a strong selling point for their program, guess they will have to ammend their sales pitch now.

From what I remember of Ft. Knox, Land Nav will be quite different then at Ft. Lewis. At least it won't rain as much....except for this summer which has been unusually dry and sunny.

Adapt and move on I guess.
 
Sad about the switch, as I was looking for an excuse to head to Tacoma next summer (to visit family, of course:)...
When I discussed the possibility of the move with DS this summer, he thought a few less trees "might" help the land Nav scores...
Aglahad: I can't speak as to how CC utilized the Permanent Medical support vs the Temps, however DS's MSU spent three weeks of AT time up there this summer in support of LDAC...(As a cadet, DS was not given orders to go along). I'm sure combining the two camps may provide a streamlining of support resources, and the Reserve MSU's can fill in the holes as they did this year...
Fortunately, DS is acclimated to the heat, and experienced BCT through a very humid summer at Ft. Jackson a few years ago...
Jcleppe, I agree about the learning curve and hope there is not too much differential from beginning to end...We can hope that a little "flexibility" and "go with the flow" is emphasized for both cadets and cadre. At least they have 10 months to prepare...

The MSUs are used to help with blood draws, physical exams and urinalysis. Any support unit can do that. What I am talking about is the waivers and consults needed for cadets who come to LDAC with new or un caught medical issues needing specialized physicans and facilities that don't just readily appear. I am very curious to see how they will work around this and 6000 cadets. Also many cadre show up needing PHAs which throws another wrench into the equation...
 
LDAC

While DS attended LTC at Fort Knox this year (month of July) it rained and rained and when it wasn't raining you were soaked with humidity. He said the woods were so thick that even on a breezy day there was no air circulating.

Hottest day was the day on the firing range, I think he said the thermometer reached 105.

Land Nav was very thick woods and steep hills. The LTC course wasn't real big, maybe 1 mile square. I'm sure they'll probably layout some new courses for LDAC. They have plenty of acreage there.
 
Also, not sure about the medical comments, it's not my background but there's a full blown hospital at Fort Knox. When we were there they were talking of doing updates and expanding it.

I'm not sure what other assets for cadets would not be available there as commented on above. It seemed to have everything that LTC needed plus some.
