Can my class rank and GPA make up for low ACT scores?

I was just wondering if my class rank and GPA would make up for my low act scores. This year, I am taking seven honors and ap classes, and my GPA is around 3.9 and I am in the top 10% of my class. My ACT superscore is a 30 (36 eng, 31 math, 27 read and 27 science). I am doing everything I can to bring up my reading and science, but in that off chance that I can't, will my other academic standings make up for it and even it out? Thanks!

Your ACT scores aren't bad but keep working on bringing them up. It ALL matters. Great GPA and class placement certainly help, but the SAT/ACT scores are the only nationally standardized thing that they have to compare you to others, so it's pretty important. The school profile for your GPA and class placement will also make a difference.

I had a 29 ACT, 1960 SAT, and good class rank and GPA. I got in. I can't guarantee you the same results, but it's a good indicator. Keep working at it and you should get a good result.

Short version...

ACT scores, and SAT scores are crucial...and they are looked at closely. The two areas looked at the MOST are...

<<<wait for it>>>

ENGLISH and MATH!

Your 36 and 31 are superb! They will serve you well! I would STILL retake the test and try to bring those other two scores up to 30 or better. THAT would give you a monster ACT performance!

BUT that's not going to do it alone. As the other's have said...it's the entire package that is scored; you have some superb scores, and an excellent GPA...but all the rest will factor in as well.

SO...congratulations! You're doing well but...it's only September...keep pushing!! :thumb:

Personally, I think you look very strong academically. If you are in the top 10% of your class (or higher) I would not be surprised.

If I may ask, do you do any sports and extracurricular, and if so, what do you do?

Oh yes! I am captain of 4 sports teams (paintball, basketball, track, cross country), 2 of which are varsity (track, cross country), I am an Eagle Scout, attended boys state, and am president and founder of a school club and a charity. I have a lot of other little things too!

Very strong application, I can imagine.

Do you have a hobby or passion? Or some awesome life experience that people would love hearing about?

That's the only other thing I could say is a definite tangible (EG: for essays). Other than that, i'd say you have a VERY strong application, and if you get a nomination (esp. a primary nomination) I'll probably see you around the terrazzo next year.

That being said, i'm not admissions, so I don't know for sure. All I know is that you have a fairly impressive resume.

The original question asked about class ranking and GPA. That part depends on how hard the class load is and how hard the school is.

And that will determine how much weight they carry...BTW did you apply for the summer seminar (name changed recently I think)?
