I'm a sophomore in high school, when should I start contacting marine officers and getting ready for nrotc scholarship? I want to get NROTC Scholarship, Marine Option...

The application for your age group will open up in the spring of your junior year

Right now, concentrate on your education, physical fitness and extra curriculars. Strive for leadership roles. Participate in sports.

No need to contact the Marines at this point

Good luck!

Jr. Year

KenSe12,

For you the application will come around April of your Jr. year...

While you wait there ia alot you can do to ready yourself. I will only post a few items, others will add and give other advise.

http://www.nrotc.navy.mil/ -- Start reading!!

1. GRADES...Keep them up!
2. SAT / ACT... Prep, prep, prep, prep and take both!!!
3. Leadership...Community, School & Sports!
4. Watch the forum for the NROTC offers that will roll out between now and April, many will post their stats.
a. Take a look at the NROTC college list and get some ideas what it
takes to get into some of the colleges. You will find that the NROTC
scholarship is not what gets you into a college.
5. Sports...Get into one if you havent already!
6. Class standing...Top 20% is good, top 10% very good.
7. Start and end each school year on a high note. Engage your teachers and engage in the classroom.
8. Take the tough right over the easy wrong. In other words stay out of trouble. As a HS coach I see it all the time, kids just want to be accepted by others. Being cool and fitting in is difficult at the HS level. March to your own drum beat and don't allow yourself to be pulled into a tough spot.
9. Call the Navy / Marine recruiting office and ask for a mentor, I'm confident they will work with you. Better yet stop by and tell them you want to talk to both of them. Great guidance!!
10. Use this forum to research and ask questions.

Good luck, your journey has started.

+1 to Ex.BT.USN. I would add a few things.

1. Although talking to recruiters can be helpful, be sure they understand you want NROTC. Treat anything they say about enlisting with a grain of salt (ie. ignore it). If you get a chance to work with the poolees, that's not a bad idea.

2. Take a look at the class profile for the recent USNA plebe classes. The stats you see there will be similar to what the NROTC scholarship winners (Marine option or otherwise) have. In fact I think you would find the NROTC stats to be a bit higher than what you see there.

3. Really emphasize the athletics and physical training. Very important for Marine options. Take a look at the Marine PFT. You'll need to perform that physical test and do well on it to receive a scholarship.

In addition to the above, take a look into the USMC Summer Leadership and Character Development Academy. http://www.mcrc.marines.mil/Portals/95/SLCDA/SLCDA School Brief Nov 28a version b.pdf

I have no personal knowledge of the course but have read some great feedback on this forum. I believe you can find some personal reports on it under the Naval Academy section.

+1 to USMCGrunt. I, too, only know it from articles but it looks like a terrific program. In fact when I read about it I was wishing I could attend it or that it had been available when my son was considering this path.
