Hey all,

Is there a list of summer program options for AROTC cadets? If so, where can I find them? Found a couple on GoArmy.com like CULP, LDAC.

But was looking for MSI or MSII cadets, if possible.

thanks

It will probably be best for your son to talk with his cadre.

There are many, varied opportunities for summer training, the issue is not every school gets a chance to send cadets to every opportunity. While Mountain Warfare or Northern Warfare may be a school cadets can attend, not every battalion will have the opportunity to send a cadet. School will receive school slots, and sometimes the slots will be given out by the brigade through an application or recommendation process.

There are times when one or two slots are made available to the Brigade, how active the schools cadre is in searching for these slots will sometimes determine what comes available.

Last year the MSGT called my son and told him he found one Winter Mountain Warfare slot available in the Brigade, he literally had just a few minutes to say yes or no...he said yes. The MSGT made the call and was able to get the slot. Chance sometimes has a lot to do with it.

Most Battalions will lobby for whatever they can get, and it changes from year to year. Tell your son to be proactive and let the cadre know his desire to attend training. Above all tell him to work hard, keep a high GPA and APFT score, keep very active in ROTC and work to be at the top of his MS Class. This will allow him to take advantage of opportunities that may come up.

LDAC is something every cadet will attend.

CULP is something every contracted cadet can apply, the issue here is being fully contracted before they can apply. If a MS1 has passed the APFT, filled out all the paperwork and has signed the contract before the CULP application due date they will have a shot to attend the following summer.

The rest of the schools are given out by either the battalion or the brigade.

Thanks for such detailed info. When he came home this weekend, he mentioned that he didn't think he would have a shot at any training since most is geared toward MSIII and MSIV. He expressed an interest in airbourne school. Researched on the cadet command site and it didn't say a specific year. Just wondering if he had a shot. I will talk with him again.

So far (1 week of training) only 2 freshman cadets have passed PFT. He was one, so it looks like he is doing well... I keep stressing the importance of being a high performer academically as well as in the unit. He is the only one that can make things happen for him. He knows this and seems to understand the importance. He's already volunteered for 2 activities within the unit. He seems to be proactive. It's so hard letting him grow up and take charge of this. I know I have to step back. It's just so difficult:eek3:

Actually most of the summer training such as Airborne, Air Assault, Mountain Warfare and so on is geared toward the summer between the sophomore and junior year. MS3's are busy getting ready for LDAC and the extra summer training for them usually involves CTLT. There is no summer training opportunities for MS4's since they will graduate at the end of the year.

A lot will depend on how many Airborne slots your son's battalion receives. Then it will depend on your son's placement on the class OML among the other contracted cadets when offers are given which is usually around the beginning of the second semester of their sophomore year.

MS1's usually do not attend schools such as Airborne but their are sometimes exceptions to that rule. CULP is something he can apply for this year, just make sure he signs his contract soon so he is eligible to apply. The application process is early this semester.

Sounds like he is getting off to a good start. Best of luck to your son.

Thank you. He will contract this week. I'll let him know that he should talk to his PMS and start applying if applicable.

Project Global Officer (Project GO). http://www.rotcprojectgo.org/ I don't see any reason why a Contracted cadet wouldn't fit this program the summer after MSI year . It is however better for most languages to have completed two semesters of the chosen language before the Project GO summer. Our daughter attended one in Morocco for eight weeks. DOD paid almost everything. There is a repayment obligation if a cadet drops ROTC after getting Project GO paid for by the DOD.

I believe there are also summer language seminars not involving travel abroad available at some colleges through Project GO. NC State had such a program summer of '12 at least.

Yes, they're actually the more abundant offerings under Project GO. The Study Abroad aspect is the smaller portion of Project GO.
