combat shooting team?

Is there currently a Combat Shooting Team and the Air Force Academy? and who would I be able to contact to find info on the team and the requirements to join. I want to start practicing for the tryouts.

YES! There is a Combat Shooting Team at the Academy.

My son is currently a C2C on the team. They just competed in Hartford, Connecticut at the Joint Service Academy Combat Weapons Competition. From there they traveled to North Carolina to spend their Spring break Training.

There is some great video and lots of good pictures there. Checkpoint had an article about them this past year. I cannot remember the month.

Tryouts in the fall.

One thing is for sure … they fire a lot of rounds! And have a lot of fun.

Combat shooting team

Yes there is a combat shooting team. I have a son who is C3C and the team is presently in North Carolina doig some traing over spring break with a special ops team after they particiapted in an all academies competition near Boston last weekend. He is enjoying being on the team and enjoys the other cadets who are part of it. It wasn't easy getting on the team because they only take 1 or 2 additions each year for each class. I think they added 4-5 members this year out of around 45-50 who showed initial interest. Signs up and try outs happen around the beginning of each year. As I understand the process the team doesn't require you to be a marksman coming into it, they are interested to see you demonstrate that you are serious and committed to being on the team.

My son did a fair amount of shooting before attending the academy and has his own rifle and 9mm pistol but most of his experience was casual target practice and some skeet.

I don't know what criteria the team will use this year, but I helped design the try-outs from 2 years ago. The team generally looks for people who are quick learners, team players, willing to commit to the team, decent shooters, in decent physical shape, and who have a good attitude. Marksmanship can be taught, but commitment and teamwork takes a lot more to develop. That is why the team generally has a very competitive and lengthy try-out. Expect PT, shooting, interviews, and maybe some other surprises.

The CST was, hands down, the best activity I was involved in at USAFA.

Falcons needed more shot gun practice!

My son said that the shotgun was the Falcons weakest area. Last year they came in 3rd and they were hoping to close the gap. Well one more year for my guy, maybe they can get a little better intel on the next years games and bring home the gold!

Yeah, we didn't focus much on the shotgun. It's not likely to be our issued weapon. Sound tactical employment of rifles and pistols was our emphasis, when I was there.

Sorry to drag up an old thread. But seeing your quote I thought I would pass along that you might be one of the people responsible for beating on my DS (inderectly) recently at CST tryouts.

He didn't want to give too much away, but he did share that the PT portion was the single toughest thing he'd ever been through physically. If you knew his flair for understatement, that's saying something!

I guess they got back near midnight after having run to and from Jack's Valley (what? 6.6 miles each way at altitude!) and a whooooole lot of stuff in between. He and his squadmate were totally exhausted, covered in dirt, etc but so pumped on adrenaline that I guess they "attacked" the rest of their roommates when they got back (no furniture broken that they reported!).

In any case, he's made the probaitionary team and I'm not sure I've seen him prouder!

Congratulations to him! I graduated in 2010, so the fall 2009 try-out was the last one I was cadre for. From what I've seen, the selection process has only increased in difficulty, and the quality of the team and training remains very high.
