DS considering applying for CULP (or any other summer schools/programs that may be available to an MS1). He is a fully contracted MS1 so I believe he has met the first requirement. Any words of wisdom on the program(s)/schools or help on the getting info on the program(s)/schools would be much appreciated. Thanks.

They pay your costs, they pay you to participate, they give you OML points; you expand your borders, learn flexibility when they reassign you last minute, you meet great people, you learn a million other things - like rescheduling your own flight so you can arrive home sooner because you are a privileged member of the military.

Your son should let his cadre know he is interested. Some battalions have a formal presentation by cadets who have participated in the most recent CULP to help familiarize their colleagues with the program. Unless there is a firm policy at his battalion not to allow MS1s to participate in CULP or other summer training, he should not let his MS1 status discourage him. Although Cadet Command encourages ROTC cadets to take part in this enriching experience, some cadets have other priorities. There probably won't be many MS1s at his battalion (unless it is a large one) who are both contracted and want to do CULP, so he should have a leg up. CULP is easier to get into than schools like Air Assault and Airborne because it is focused solely on undergraduates and has relatively more slots.

There will be an application process with forms to be filled out around November. His PMS will then approve or not and submit recommendations to the Brigade. Although he will be asked to provide information on fluency in foreign languages, it's unclear to me whether this has much impact. I know Cadet Delahanty was surprised by the general lack of foreign language fluency among his fellow cadets.

My DS went two years ago and had a thoroughly good time, as did the 8 cadets whom seem to fill the slots every year.
 
Most of our Cadets have been teaching english to one group of folks or another, so language proficiency is no longer a big factor for this program, as it once was. When the program first started they looked for language skills. Currently the program is more focused on cultural immersion.

Great program though.
