Transferring to a SMC

I'm currently a freshman at a small university in Missouri (class of 2017), and I'm looking to transfer to a SMC next fall. I intend to commission into the Navy.

Specifically, I'd like to know what transfer student life is like at the various SMCs. I've heard that transfers at VMI stay with the class they went through the ratline with (eg I would be c/o 2018, but would graduate a year early). Are they all like that? Or would I be "bumped up" after I complete my first year?

Any advice on transferring would be much appreciated!

In the VT Corps of Cadets, transfers generally would spend their entire 1st year as a freshman in the corps, half of their second year as a sophomore and half as a junior. Then by senior year, they're caught up with the class that they'll graduate/commission with.

There are plenty of transfers that enter to VMI; and you will find that many of your questions could be answered by trying an 'Open House' visitation.

Good to hear a prospective cadet from Missouri. The current Corps Class President is from the state of Missouri :)

Shall you find the desire to become a VMI cadet; BEST of luck to you.

Thanks for the info on VMI and VT! Anyone have info on Norwich and The Citadel?

For Norwich you will be a Sophomore but be like all of the other freshmen who are Rooks. You will graduate on time but go through Rookdom with the freshmen (and the other few transfers).

Well, of course I would go through the "first year experience" at any of the SMCs, my question is about what happens after. Would I stay with the c/o 2018 at Norwich? Or would I be "bumped up" to 2017 at some point (like at VT)?

Are you in NROTC at your current University? Assuming so (as your intent is to Commission), you would complete the Rook year with 2018 class and then be back on track for class of 2017 as a Junior (assuming all your credits transfer).
If you haven't done so, you need to contact the specific SMC in which you are interested ASAP. Good luck!

standard at The Citadel is same as VMI, all cadets must spend their first year in the '4th Class System' or 'Ratline' regardless of what academic year they are. It is of course possible to graduate early if you have enough credits from another college and when you apply your transcripts will be reviewed to determine what classes are accepted; as long as you have attended an accredited college your credits should transfer but the registrar makes the final determination.

It is, as I understand it, possible to transfer into the Corps of Cadets at Texas A&M University (TAMU). Those that do are referred to “Frogs”. Not having attended TAMU I don’t know why and wouldn’t hazard a guess. That said, Frogs spend a semester as a “Fish”, see below.

The Phantoms are an outfit organized to transition current college students into the Corps. Transfer students and current A&M students can join the Corps and SQ 18, undergo the “fish” experience for one semester, and then move up to the class commensurate with their academic standing. http://corps.tamu.edu/Outfit-Pages/squadron-18-phantom.html

Most of these schools are very accepting to incoming sophomores who have proven themselves with one year of college. They and almost all colleges lose quite a few freshman. Big question for you may be how to make up freshman year of ROTC. Not sure if Navy requires 4 years. Ask them.

Unfortunately, I am not in an NROTC unit this year (taking Army instead), as no schools in my area offer it.

As an early poster commented- VMI will allow you to academically transfer your credits in. To be clear- at VMI you will go thru the Rat line regardless of what Academic class you are, and your privileges are with the class that you went thru the Rat Line with unless the current first class decides to extend First Class privileges to you in your final academic year.

Definitely do your research and call the SMCs, but have you considered seeking commission in the Army? At Norwich there are several Juniors being awarded Army contracts not so many for Navy. Again, best wishes and thanks for being willing to serve!
