Searched forum and found diagnostic APFT mentioned. But what exactly is the difference between APFT and diagnostic APFT?

DS passed first APFT but said that he has his diagnostic APFT this morning. The only thing he thinks is the difference is to see who needs remedial PTs.

Thanks

no difference other than diagnostic APFT cannot use for record purposes.

At son's battalion, diagnostic APFT results can be used to validate a scholarship and/or to get off of remedial PT. They take a diagnostic APFT approx every two weeks. I think only the MSIs and MSIIIs have to take the diagnostic every time it's given.

Every two weeks is kind of excessive and a waste of a PT day IMO. I am not quite sure how much improvement you could really see in that time period.

We did APFTs every month

DS, passed his first AFPT in Aug. and contracted a couple of weeks ago. Just took another AFPT yesterday along with a bunch of other MS I's. ( he was pumped since he increased his score about 10 points from his previous one) He thought it was held for the purpose to take scores for contracting since there are about 25 MS I's that still need to pass the AFPT to contract. To date only 4 MS I's have fully contracted to his knowledge. I guess they do an AFPT every 2-3 weeks??

I agree but that's what they told us at the parents' briefing and it was confirmed by my son. Maybe it's only for the first several weeks before the major one (the "official" one) in late October.

October seems kind of early for the official graded APFT, most Battalions do them in December. Of course that's for schools that are on semesters, not quarters.

Quick question.

The "official" AFPT is in December? Is not the one used to activate the contract the official AFPT? Thanks

The APFT your son first took was just to activate the scholarship and contract. He will take several more during the semester leading up to a Recorded APFT, usually in December. The recorded APFT is the one that goes into his record. The previous APFT's are diagnostic, which means just that, they will use these scores to determine whether the cadet is on remedial and what their standing is on the battalion OML up to the recorded APFT in December. For schools on semesters, there will be one recorded APFT per semester, one in December and one in May.

The one's that really count are the two recorded APFT's that are given during their MS3 year, the scores will be part of his OMS and will effect his place on the OML.

Jcleppe, thanks so much for clarifying. I totally understand. So the first passing APFT was in order to begin the scholarship and contract. Any other APFT given during the semester is strictly for diagnostic purposes to know where the cadet stands and to see improvement. The frequency at which these are administered varies from battalion to battalion. The "recorded" APFT is in Dec. and May. These are the "official" ones that matter and become part of their records. A cadet must pass the Dec. and May APFT. Just curious, what happens if they don't pass one or both of the Dec. and May?

DS texted his results of his diagnostic APFT this morning. He passed. Max pushups, and shaved 40 sec off run time. However, he still needs improvement in this area. Did well on sit-ups but of course can still improve. He said that several cadets still have yet to pass.

So, just curios, why don't the MSII APFTs count towards the OML?

Thompson, that's most likely because a good percentage of cadets are never an MSII to begin with - it would skew the OML calculation for those who enter as MSIIIs.

Not all battalions have record APFT's only in Dec. and May. We give a record APFT on Day 1 of the fall semester. We have a few others throughout the year as well. Our MSIII's take a diagnostic monthly.

Philmont, you're correct - they certainly do count for internal OML purposes, just not for national OML.
