My son just had his NROTC interview this morning at the Great Lakes Naval Base. I have been reading threads here for the past couple of weeks (just found this site) and people have been asking about their NROTC status after the first board in August.

But the Chief told me today that NROTC did not have a board in August due to a lack of funds. The first board will convene Sept. 23rd in Pensacola so they interviewed at least 17 kids today and plan on shipping their packets to Florida on Tuesday. They will then choose more kids this month as they have to choose for both August and September....if that makes sense.

Thought someone else might like to know.

This was confirmed by our nrotc coordinator.

Review Process

If the board now meets late does this change how they review the candidates?

Not trying to be cute but as an example. My DS had his package completed and submitted in June so he made the first board in August.

Will all the kids that had their package in early still be seen first? Or... Does it now become a mass bundle of just pick from the pile?

It's a queue. First in will still be reviewed first. The only change I can see is that they may attempt to go through more applications on each board to make up lost ground. The fact that they started late will have absolutely no impact on whether your DS gets a scholarship or not.

BTW, there are still many who will apply but haven't even started their application yet (believe it or not).

Got it...

Thank you kinnem...

Also watched the you-tube clip, good stuff!!

5 yrs here and I believe this has occurred every single yr. I can't recall one yr when the 1st NROTC board met on the date that candidates were told.

As kinnem stated it is a queue system. You will still be in the same place, BUT here is why I disagree with kinnem for the 23rd board.

The members will be on TDY, and the fiscal budget ends the 30th. If they take that board from 3 days to 5, it is more TDY money, yet still FY13. Cancelling the 1st board, delaying it to the 23rd, while extending the review dates, they are not saving any funds. Keeping it to 3 days for the 23rd saves money and they can than push it over to the following boards which would be FY14. At that point they can do a larger 1st board come Oct 1st.

WOW...

Pima,

Not only are you good with advise on the forum your also excellent with budget matters. Yes, off topic;however, I'll bet in touch before my next budget meeting for advise...:thumb:

Thank you for the feedback I hope the powers of all see your post. WOW!!

One last thought...

I have to keep reminding myself of what I'm learning yet not thinking about.

Sept, Oct, Nov, Dec, Jan, Feb, March, April. One upside is knowing that our DS has the physical and CFA as Q'ed.

Yup, it can be a long wait. We didn't hear a final negative response until April. Of course, we only had 2 boards to wonder about so perhaps we didn't go as crazy as most. Hope you hear much, much erlier than that.

So if the NROTC board actually meets this week....how soon will ds find out whether he has made the cut or is still being considered for next month's board?

If he received a scholarship, it can take up to a month to hear. Not saying you won't hear quicker, but I've seen it take a month in the past. If he is being re-boarded, you will typically not hear anything. We did not hear a final negative on a scholarship until April. Hang tough. Keep working alternate plans, hopefully to include NROTC as a college programmer, if that is a possibility, at an institution that's a match for your DS and financially affordable. :thumb:

NROTC App.

I submitted my application just under 2 months ago for NROTC, am i supposed to receive a letter on whether I qualified for NROTC with DoDmerb? I received one saying so from USMMA for them, saying that I should receive them from any other Academies, etc. I applied for.

NROTC normally will not kick off DoDMERB until a scholarship is awarded. At that time they will see you have already had the physical and will use the results from that to determine if you are medically qualified. Each service has different requirements so there is always the (probably slim) possibility that you might be DQed for NROTC. It doesn't seem likely since USMMA is happy but there is always the theoretical possibility. I'm not sure how they notify you that you're qualified. I would expect it to show up in the portal and probably also a snail mail, but I'm just guessing.
