My son is a senior, graduating May 2014. He has been working on his application to West Point, as well as researching ROTC options and other colleges. We've been quite lost in our information gathering about ROTC. For one, we cannot figure out the deadline for applying for ROTC. I think I finally stumbled upon something here about an October deadline, but I haven't been able to find that at any of the websites. Is that so? Is he too late to begin the application process? Is the deadline for opening a file or for completion of a file? Thank you for any help.

The first board meets in October. If all info is in then, it will go before that board. There are 2 more boards after that, but I can't remember when. Search on here for "AROTC board dates" and there will be a post with a link to the golden Knights battalion. It has tons of useful information including that. I am a computer dummy so don't know how to copy the link as a link! Sorry!

Here's a link to the Golden Knight battalion's info on board dates courtesy of ClarksonArmy: http://goldenknightbattalion.wordpress.com/category/the-scholarship-process/

You want to get the applications in as early as possible so that your application is reviewed by as many boards as possible (if necessary). This improves your odds as the number of remaining available scholarships obviously goes down with each board.

Similarly, if you are also looking at NROTC, which I know lists a deadline - you should ignore it and get the application in as soon as possible. Where a final deadline is listed, it means that's the last possible date you can get your application in for the final board. By then it's almost certainly too late unless you are truly a stellar candidate.

Here are the deadline dates for the AROTC Scholarship application process.

It is not too late to start an application, you have probably missed the first board but if you start soon you should be able to have everything ready for the next board. There are three boards for AROTC, if you miss the first board you can still complete an application and be reviewed by the second and third boards. The final deadline for an application is Jan. 14th 2014. If you can have everything completed and submitted by Dec. 26th you will be seen by the second board.

This is a great site to get information on the application process, ask as many questions as you like and scan through some of the older posts. There are plenty of people here that can point you in the right direction.

The deadline for hitting the "submit" button on your online application is, per Clarkson's website, Jan. 10, 2014. You have a few additional weeks to provide the additional parts of the app - PFT score, SAT score evidence, school transcript, etc. Per Clarkson's website that is Feb. 28, 2014.

Oops, wrote the 14th instead of the 10th, thanks for catching that.

The dates in the Quotes are from Clarkson's blog and should all be correct.

Good luck! If you can, attend a local Parents Club of West Point that explains West Point. We attended one and had a presentation on ROTC by a local battalion that my son eventually joined after falling short despite qualifying for WP with DODMERB in hand.

Sounds good that you are checking every avenue for direction. My son is doing that now as he considers what he can do to get the most the Army offers.

Just saying, there is no "Submit" button on the app. Don't drive yourself crazy looking for one. As soon as all the categories are green and say complete, your app is effectively "submitted"!

We toured West Point historically a couple of years ago. Then last summer we visited for a prospective student tour and had lunch there (Grant's Hall?) which was great! We also got to attend a meeting with one of the admission's officers in Arlington a few weeks ago since my son was designated "competitive." From that angle we think we have West Point figured out...simply a matter of qualifying.

The difficult part is figuring out all the details for ROTC. I read the boards here on that and most of the comments and lingo are quite confusing...even though we've been to the ROTC website quite a bit. I'm not even sure where to begin asking questions. lol

I know exactly what you mean. This forum is very helpful, but it's WORK making sense of the lingo, acronyms, topics, credentials of posters and then making an educated judgement about whether or not to chime in so as to not waste people's time with bad input. Ha. Sorry for the time you wasted reading this. Gulp.

Here, this may help: The Acronym List

There is no such thing as a dumb question. Just fire away.

Don't try to understand it, just do it...Talk to the recruiting OFFICERS at the schools you are interested at (Known as ROOs)...there is a lot of information right in the application website itself...and don't try to overthink the process...It is essentially the same obligation and result as USMA, if that helps. It's only the 4 years of college that are different.
