Air Force QB...it's that kind of week

Recruiting sub-par cadets for the purposes of winning and treating them like little gods eventually comes home to roost. Ask Navy. Or Vanderbilt. Or Florida.

Haha, it's been awhile since I went to a Vandy game, but I don't remember them really holding anyone up as gods there.... there are bigger high school stadiums in Davidson County than Vandy's.

That said, I agree.

Interesting enough, he's the back-up on a losing streak. Eventually the reason will come out one way or another -- "loose lips" and all that.

It's important for midshipmen and cadets to remember, sports isn't primary... and it isn't secondary at an academy...

I'm not sure it's fair to call them sub-par cadets. There are plenty of non-athletes who struggle at USAFA.
I do feel this shows they are NOT treated like little gods, there are treated equally. It is not about winning a football game, it's about building men and women of character who can lead in the Air Force. I hope this young man straightens himself out for his own sake, not the football team.

I can promise you this.... they are NOT treated equally.

Everything else you said is how it SHOULD be, but it's not always the reality of a D1 academy with the big D1 sports... it just isn't.

Unfortunately true. Some animals are more equal than others.

I don't think anyone's disputing that there's a lot of great kids at the Academies who are athletes and a lot of oxygen thieves who aren't. But you're kidding yourself if you think that some groups don't get more little breaks along the way than your average NARP would, from admission to academics to the conduct system all the way through.

You agree, but you are wrong.

I agree that this is the way we would LIKE it to be, I 100% agree with that. But this is not the way it actually is.

Case in point, the QB's in trouble. Who knows why. Any other student... you wouldn't know, but for this student, the academy put out a statement. They are viewed differently (for often obvious reasons).

Update from the inside:

It was an honor hit. Thus the "not in good standing."

I don't think im allowed to say, but needless to say, they aren't telling the whole story, or if they are, they are a little slow in telling it.

They (the school) have their hands tied abotu what they can talk about specifically, because it is an administrative issue.

If it's honor, send him packing. Sack this QB.

Did you mean we are both wrong? My point is his punishment is public for the world to see. Most cadets are not subject to this type of exposure. He is the starting QB for a D1 school and he was benched anyway just like any other NARP plus exposed in the press. No special treatment for this D1 QB!

Folks...just a suggestion. This is a very public forum. Some of us may have heard somethings that were not disclosed in the press release. We really do not know any specific thing, we can only speculate. This is a young person's life, both he and his family will need to deal with the consequences, our discussion - such as it is - adds nothing to the outcome.

Nope, only you are wrong (unless you were a cadet and have seen something than I did.... as a cadet.... is that the case?).

He's treated differently. I didn't say that's always a good thing. But if D1 athletes don't have to complete all of the required military obligations as their classmates, I would say that's different treatment. If a bad cadet has an official statement released about an administrative issue (not saying that's a good "difference"), that is different treatment.

Look, I'm sure you THINK you have a clue about this... but you simply don't. Each cadet or midshipman on here has said otherwise. I would love to have one cadet or midshipman who says otherwise... but as of 4:51 p.m. ET Sep. 26, 2013.... I haven't seen it.

I agree with you that there SHOULDN'T be a difference... but the fact remains... there is.

I can't comment if this is his SECOND honor offense, but I have been a long proponent of ONE and DONE. A second offense is just a "told you so" moment.

The Air Force Academy had to expect the speculation. No one died (I think). "His parents will have to deal with this." Yes. As do the parents of the other 25% of students who don't make it at an academy.

They will survive. Probably won't be in an Air Force uniform, but life goes on.

LITS - Please do not misstate/misquote me. I said he and his family will have to deal with this, thus it is a personal matter. What actually happened to cause him to be suspended from the team is really none of our business, and in my estimation, it is unseemly of us to speculate since none of us are privy to the facts. I am not trying to protect the academy, I am respecting the right of this individual to his privacy (the accuracy of the cadet rumor mill not withstanding).

***RING knocker alert!!!***
For applicants, aspiring cadets and soon to be commissioned officers, above is an example of ring knocking. Please take note and spare us the arrogance. Thanks

Saying someone is wrong because they have no experience with the issue (a reoccurring theme with some SAF parents) is not ring knocking.

I could show you what is... But you probably wouldn't like it.
