Zoomies are reporting that Navy v Air Force is canceled

As per ESPN and Sports Center AirForce AD states all NCAA events requiring travel are cancelled. CBS even offered to foot the bill for the FB game.

I didn't see that they (CBS) offered to foot the bill. I saw that they said they would "cover the game" if it is played, and offer alternative programming if it is not. I thought "cover" in that sense meant "air". Did you see something else where they specifically offered to pay for the expense of hosting the game? That would be something.

It appears a mix of both, in the post I read it stated cover which could be as you stated to "air", but it also went into how the $$ paid to the SA's for airing the game would cover cost.

Do some folks ever not

come out when this topic arises? I think it would behoove anyone who has such a hang up about it to look into it a little bit more. Bigger minds than ours have found value in D1 activities at the larger SA's, why is it such a wretched big deal to those who have never been in it, and never will be in it. God Almighty.......SOS.........

Ummm...Money?

Making a point

The game was going to be broadcast by CBS. Both schools were going to make more money that what was being spent to play the game. This decision is for the purpose of making a point (shutdown = inflicting pain to the public), not about the inability to spend money.

I agree. Why else would they cancel every single SA athletic event, many of which are ran for absolutely no cost?

The same reason they barricade the Washington DC WWII memorial that is entirely outdoors and threaten to arrest 90+ year-old WWII vets who try to visit it.

I think the Navy AD said it best... its about "optics". Perception is everything. Although private funds may pay for the team to travel and all the other stuff we have seen in the news articles, there are still DoD funds used, as little as they might be. Although they may have nothing to do with the game directly, professors are furloughed. Is the Academic Dean? He isn't needed for a football game, but I imagine he attends games along with the Supt, Dant, Dep Dant, and AD. Are all the trainers NAAA employees or are some paid with other money? Are there some football coaches who also teach some PE classes (pretty standard at Navy, you will often hear of a coach with tenure... I know all for teaching 1 PE class... ridiculous) for extra pay. So in some ways they are furloughed too. The USNA police force... I imagine they are working, but probably not pulling overtime. All that extra traffic and personnel on the yard probably requires extra shifts. I read yesterday that the USAFA Football Sports Information Director was furloughed. What about Navy's? These guys work incredibly hard and with a game that has that many viewers and with the extra media coverage, how would this all be handled? A lot of this seems minor and trivial, but there is so much that goes into putting games on, never mind Navy vs. Air Force. Even if NAAA, Air Force (not sure what their sports thing is called), and CBS offer to pick up the slack to include paying with private funds for furloughed employees, staff, etc (I suppose they would be individual contract employees to NAAA at that point).

Most of all its a perception thing. It sucks, but who can complain when people aren't getting pay checks.

I'm fine with complaining. A company doesn't budget, comes up short, operates in the red for too long... they cut positions.

These federal employees are furloughed. In the private sector, they would have collected their things, and would be printing off resumes (OK, I bet some federal employees are printing the resumes now too). Of course, the flip side is, if a company was run like the U.S. federal government (and many state/local governments), they would have gone bankrupt long ago.

Perception is BS, though, but reality. The federal government throws $300,000,000 to Detroit. The Federal Reserve continues to pump $85,000,000,000 a month in QE?

Yes, it's political and it's a PR stunt.

I talked to someone at CGA yesterday (homecoming is coming up) and homegames come at little to no cost. Travel is where the money is spent.

USNA1985 Thanks for pointing that out at the WWII Memorial. It is outside and totally open, staffed by nobody and they put up barricades???????? This is getting more stupid by the minute. Solve this issue quick. My Mid lost his Arabic teacher to the shutdown. What does he do? Teach himself!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Go Navy!!!

Just heard on the radio - the game is ON!!! They received permission from DOD, and it was pointed out that USNA actually stood to LOSE 3-4 million in revenue if the game was cancelled.

Last I heard my mid's sporting event this wkend was on but I am far more concerned about classes. I know they can be made up but my concern is if this is prolonged it may change the anchor dates which will effect their summer blocks or potentially cancel spring break.

My mid is concerned about that too. His Chemistry teacher said that if this drags on more than a week, they may have to make it up be cutting into winter break. Longer still and I think you are correct -- it could affect summer blocks or spring break.

They will bring back Saturday classes before any of that!

A few years back when I was a 3/C we missed almost a full week of classes due to snow. It was glorious while it lasted but they got us back by having extended schedules for several days once things normalized. Basically, we did a full day of classes...and then did another two periods of classes we'd already had during what would normally be sports period. It sucked for the profs because it messed with their planning and sucked for the mids for obvious reasons, but I could see them trying to work something similar before cutting into break time.
Remember, it's not an insignificant cost to feed and support four thousand mids on the Yard versus the couple hundred of so who would happen to be there on restriction, for sports, or whatever else. This is also the institution that resumed classes like a day after Hurricane Isabel. They'll find a way.

On a side note...mids with lots of cancelled classes and nothing to do during Air Force week? Anarchy.
