DoD Shuts down sports

"Commander In Chief Trophy" is given to Navy for another year? No games no results. This is such a joke. I have been to many of the Monuments on the Mall in Washington. I have never seen anyone working there whose furlough would require a closure of any of them. Now they are saying the Mall itself will be closed. If anyone has seen the condition of the Mall recently it should be closed to pick up the trash and repair the grass.

One word: Good

I'm sorry but like Huskie_USMMA2017, I'm not brokenhearted. This SHOULD be one of the first things to go. I would gladly give up my pay as well if it meant I didn't have to listen to my parents on the phone this morning as they told me they were being furloughed for the second time this year or that USMMA could be reopened. There are much more important things to worry about than D1 sports. If I thought it would help, I would cancel D3 athletics as well but we all know that doesn't make much of a difference.

The sad thing is that it isn't even about whether that money should be spent or not. It's just Congress won't even negotiate far enough to continue the past continuations of the budget.

There will be a lot of angry kickballers....

Naval Academy Athletic Director Chet Gladchuk - The Naval Academy Athletic Association is a private organization not funded by the government. Gladchuk said the Air Force-Navy game could be held without any “appropriated funding.” Air Force recently created a similar athletic association that operates using private funds, donations and revenue from intercollegiate contests.

“We could run our entire athletics program and conduct events as we always do without any government funds,” Gladchuk said. “In talking to the Air Force athletic director, their football team could execute the trip without government funding.”

Asked why the Department of Defense was suspending intercollegiate athletic contests if government funds are not required, Gladchuk said he was told it was about “optics.”

I’ll say it again – our local school district pulls the same stunt when bond levy voting time comes around.
