Everyone always says "watch out if you live in a competitive state" when talking about nominations.

Which states are usually competitive?

Usually, the bigger states are the more competitive ones, the states that have high school prep schools for the academies, or even the ones that are just big "academy" states. The ones that I know that are really competitive for sure are California, Colorado, Maryland, New York, and Texas.

I hope that helps!

While at our Congressman's office two weeks ago, there were about 60 candidates interviewing with three SA's.

georgia is pretty competitive too in certain counties. for example, there are three of us
just from my school all applying to usafa and usma.

In my congressional district (SE Minnesota), there are three people applying to the AFA.

lucky! in my congressional district (metro atlanta area) there are 13 for usafa and 9 for usma. then again, once you get out of the metro area there aren't really any others at all. i just meant that myself and two of my friends all have the same goal.

My district in GA is really competitive because Ft. Benning is in it...lucky.

I got in with a presidential nom.

The other guys who got appointments (to USMA and USNA) received one from the Senators I think...don't remember though...

GA is competitive; however, last year we sent 40 cadets to WP, so please know if you are a competitive candidate your chances are good! Our MOC's communicate with each other, too, as to not duplicate noms if possible. Although some candidates do get noms from both Isakson and Chambliss, most don't. Last year, of the 10 Isakson put on his slate, 9 started on R day. Unfortunately, #10 had DodMerb issues he could not resolve or get a waiver for. Georgia is well-represented at all the academies. You cadet-hopefuls have a lot going for you; hope to see you at the parents' club send off in June!

thank you, that is very encouraging! i feel good about having isakson as my nominator now.

anyone else out there from a state considered non-competitive?

In my district (OH 2) there were:
10 USMA nominations
12 AFA nominations (me included, for two vacancies)
4 USNA nominations
1 USMMA nomination

i wonder how CT stands, it seems like our numbers are smaller then other states but a lot of kids come from high end private schools so they're heavy competition on the nomination slates

Wow, Texas is a competitive state? I never knew that--I actually received a nomination from a Texas Senator (Kay Bailey Hutchison) and everyone's been telling me that that's really good. I guess I didn't realize the value of such a nomination.

Texas sends more cadets to West Point than any other state. You will be in good company. Congratulations!
I *think* Pennsylvania is #2.

I found out on December 3, but on her website it says that she sends out letter up until even February.

Hey, I also received my first nomination from Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson. I also found out on the same date, but I guess that would make sense. I got a phone call from one of her staff during community service so it really threw me off guard.

I knew it was competitive, but Senator Hutchinson said in her letter that over 500 people applied for nominations (granted I'm sure that is spread over all 4 nomination academies).
