Does the NROTC have an Immediate Selection Decision based on SAT/ACT Scores

My DS received the NROTC scholarship this year through the ISR (Immediate Scholarship Reservation). It is based on the same criteria as the standard scholarship in that it is based on your whole person score. Not just test scores but ECAs, GPA, course rigor, leadership roles, etc. The decision is made by the Commanding Officer of the Navy Recruiting District rather than the Selection Board in Pensacola. Once you are selected and the CO signs off on your contract, you packet is sent to the Board who only confirms you are eligible. After that, the school assignment is made.

The idea behind it is to get highly qualified candidates before they start applying and get accepted by other scholarships/schools.

This is my understanding of the process anyhow.

Was that for 2014 or 2013? Is ISR the same as Immediate Decision Selection.

Not sure what you mean. My son is a senior in high school and will be graduating in May.

ISR is the same thing as Immediate Scholarship Decision.

+1 to grevar's explanation.

I will also add, and I could be wrong and it may depend on your area, that the ISR scholarships are probably all awarded at this time. As grevar said, they are typically used to quickly nab the strongest candidates.
June 3rd, DS's recruiter called while he was at NASS and told him he was going before the CO for his interview for the ISR (we had never heard of it and this was also his first contact with the ROTC recruiter). He hadn't finished the application at this point and was headed to Boys State the day after he came home from NASS so he was unable to interview those two weeks and the scholarships were awarded on the spot. DS's recruiter said the CO has the ability to award 3 ISR scholarships in his 4-state area...pretty stiff competition, to say the least.

Thank you all for your posts. I met with my local Naval Recruiter for my NROTC interview, submitted all required documents mid August and just recently "read" about the Immediate Decision Scholarship...The recruiter never mentioned it, and I didn't even know the District CO could/should be contacted or that he/she was even involved with decision making. I thought the application went straight to Pensacola. So, I guess I'm not quite informed. I was surprised to learn that some candidates had already received their Scholarship. I did learn today via email, that the Board did not meet in August and will in
fact be meeting late September. Again, thank you for the posts.

Also...I might add, that I felt really informed about the proper steps for NROTC and now feel somewhat disappointed. Should I have known about this ISR?

From what I have been told, the ISR will find you, you don't find it. I've heard of others getting smacked down for inquiring about it. We didn't know anything about it until it was offered.

grevar is correct that it comes looking for you, not the other way around. The ISR always comes as a surprise to everyone. It's the best kept secret and you shouldn't consider yourself misinformed.

I would say, if you look at another of the previous posts, unless you think you are one of the top three scholars/leaders/athletes across a 4 state region, I wouldn't let it further bother me. You have enough on your plate to get a scholarship or even get accepted to colleges and proceed as a college programmer to be wasting time to think about it. Keep up the good work and maintain a positive attitude. :thumb:

^^^^^^ agreed. I would add that selection for ISR means nothing for my sons candidacy for USNA either. You'd think that selection criteria would be similar at least. Not necessarily the case.

I was told at the USNA CVW last week that there are efforts to combine the NROTC scholarship application and the USNA application into one rather than two separate application processes. Not this year, but perhaps in the future.

Absolutely agree with kinnem! After DS got the ISR call we kicked ourselves for about 2 hours thinking all was lost and all kinds of Chicago to NASS texting drama...then we sat back and said, "what great feedback that he was being considered, however, we didn't know it existed and we were ahead of schedule, as far as we were concerned, with DS finishing his app for the (then) August board."
I am working on not starting every conversation with DS "did you check your portals?" And even went 2 whole days without mentioning anything SA or ROTC related.
Take pleasure that your app is done. Try not to stress about the things you have no control over (I'm working on this too!)

Good luck!

grevar: "smacked down"...now I really am worried. but, again, thanks for all the posts

told at the USNA CVW last week that there are efforts to combine the NROTC scholarship application and the USNA application into one rather than two separate application processes. Not this year said:
When DS started the NROTC application process in 2011, he began getting calls and snail mail from USNA encouraging him to "complete" his USNA application even though he had never started the process and never wanted to apply to USNA. We assumed at the time that there was communication between the two processes, though later heard (I think on this board) that the two were completely unrelated. Somehow the USNA received early information on DS that initiated their communication with him and it coincided with his work on the NROTC app.

That's correct. We were told at the USNA last week that both programs share only candidate biographical info so that each can market their programs to candidates applying for the others program/school.

The information is used only for marketing/recruiting purposes. Admissions criteria must stand alone for both NROTC Scholarships and USNA.

Aha, so USNA was "recruiting" DS to apply USNA probably based on some initial biographical info on DS NROTC app. That makes sense based on the type of communication he received.

He would have had to start from scratch with the USNA app, but they are proposing to someday combine the app process so candidates won't have to provide basically the same info twice.

Thanks for the clarification :thumb:

ISR

Thanks for all the information. My DS sent his NROTC application on Sunday night, met with the recuriter on Tuesday at school, interview on Wednesday and I find myself on the phone with the recruiter Wednesday afternoon talking about ISR. Never heard of it before. This forum has been a great help. His first choice is USNA. I agree, you don;t find ISR, they find you. Thanks again for the information. I am still doing research.

ISR

If an individual gets invited to an ISR interview, and are offered a scholarship, are they required to accept at that time? I do not understand the stipulations with the ISR process. IN our instance our DD has not finalized her college choice.

As I recall from reading about ISRs here the past couple years, there is usually a time period of a few days to consider the ISR. It is a family decision. In any case, I'm confident if she explains her situation they would give her adequate time to make a final decision on her school preferences. And if I'm wrong, and they don't, you could always walk away and follow the normal scholarship process.

I do know for certain her application still has to go before the board in any case to ensure she's eligible (pretty much a formality, birth certificate, proof of citizenship, and all that rot). Then it's on to DoDMERB, etc. I'm not certain about the process for school selection from that point, but clearly the sooner she were to decide the better her chances for getting her first choice school. It may even be guaranteed with an ISR but I don't really know. These are all great questions to ask during the interview. I assume she has already established an initial order of preference?

Got your PM. I responded.

Hi,

Would anybody of you guys know if ISR results with top school choice assignment have already been awarded? I understand from your postings that there was no board last August. There probably was one in September. We are now mid-October. There should be awarding of those big checks soon? Would you have that kind of information?

One more question, not about ISR or ISD. I want to confirm if the scholar has to pass the physical fitness test on her first year in college or before entering college? What happens if he/she doesn't make it to the physical fitness test? He/she has to pay back the scholarship money spent on him/her?

Thanks for your time, guys?
