AROTC Scholarship Application Questions

I have read through most of the current postings, and I am now officially in information overload. Also, since there are many differences in the processes for the different military branches, I am a still a little confused, so please bear with me.

My son is currently a junior in high school. He has decided that he definitely wants to join the Army after college and therefore has decided to go the ROTC route. Although we are definitely willing to pay for his college education if need be, we would obviously rather put that money elsewhere for him if possible. Therefore, he will be applying for the AROTC scholarship.

Here are my questions:

1. The application process for the 2015-2016 school year will open in February of 2014, correct? However, from what I've read here, the first scholarship board does not meet until October 2014. Is there any benefit to having the application completed early? From what I've read, there doesn't appear to be, and in fact waiting gives the student the most opportunity to get the best test scores, etc.

2. I read that the Army super scores the ACT. Does this apply to the SAT as well?

3. Currently, my son's top school choices are all OOS or private. He'll be choosing an in state school as well, but is one in state choice sufficient? For the out of state choices he needs to be in the top percentage of the applicants for that school to have the best chance of scholarship, right?

4. I haven't read much on the formers regarding JROTC programs. Does being in his HS JROTC (and potentially being Battalion Commander his senior year) give him any advantage in receiving a scholarship?

Thanks in advance for your patience and assistance. :help:

1. I say apply early IF this is truly what he wants for a career. Many applicants wait too long IMHO.

But what exactly IS the benefit to applying early, if the first time the board meets to award scholarships is October?

DS has scholarship from 2nd board. His benefit was expressing early interest so he could compete with kids from military families and motivated candidates that knew to to apply early and "earn what they deserve". Most juniors are already stellar and focused on something they believe in so early application reflects they are ready to benefit from scholarship and serve their term (and more).

The benefits of applying early (a relative term) include:

1) Timing the interview when the ROO has the most time will make things easier. Once school starts, the cadre become busier.

2) Getting the PFT done early (before school starts if the coach runs a fall sport) makes this task easier as well.

3) Once school starts, lots of stuff happens (applications, etc.). Getting things done during the summer beforehand (that is the optimum time not during the spring beforehand) will result in the best results because he has time to focus on them.

Thanks Goaliedad...that's what I wanted to know. My DS is in JROTC, so getting the PFT done won't be an issue. They basically do that every Friday in PT anyway. As far as the interview, they can take place over the summer?

Yes, interviews can take place over the summer. However, remember this is when a lot of training and schools occur for military members, so scheduling will occur around these items. When they are in the office during the summer, there aren't the distractions that there might be during the school year.

There is a difference between the JROTC PT test and the PT test used to contract. Just make sure your son is training for the correct one.
