HI!

I am just a senior in Oregon. I am Korean, 116 lb, 5ft 6in in height, and Im a male (I know its very shocking for a male to almost have a "female" physical type... I am thin!)

Today I took the CFA from my PE teacher, and the results are as follows:

Bball throw: 46ft
Pull ups: 12
Shuttle run: 9.4 sec
Sit ups: 76
push ups: 54
one mile run: 7:23

I am honestly scared. I am no varsity in anything (swim, cross country, or track.... but leadership im sure I maxed out all possible potentials), but Ive been lifting for more than a year now cuz I wanted to be committed to service academies... and after all the hard work and practice, this is still what I have.

I know that there are max and averages and ive looked into them already, but I don't know if I "passed" at least the "minimum" standards... someone plz help? honestly Im not sure if retaking is any good, because today was especially my "good" days physically... and "good" days are not always guaranteed no matter how good in shape you are... so please help! thank you!

To be honest I have no clue. Contact your RC about it. The most failed event is the basketball throw and I have a feeling you failed it. But again I have no clue. The run should be passing time considering I know people with worse times that got in. Best bet is to call your RC. Good luck!

I know the minimums, but I will not post them here. You failed the basketball throw. Work on using a flinging motion with the body for more distance, and eat more.

davidhwang,
I am a senior in texas and i am 5' 8" and weigh only 120 pounds. I know how you feel. I could only get my basketball 59 feet but it was from daily practice and constant trips to the gym. If you can, work on building your upper body strength, especially your back for basketball throw. In the beginning of the summer my scores were as follows:
BB throw: 42 ft
pullups: 6
shuttle: 9.5
situps: 59
pushups: 44
mile: 6:32
After a summer of working out and preparing for the CFA, i tested last week. my scores are as follows:
BB throw: 59 ft
pullups: 15
shuttle: 8.9
situps: 102
pushups: 64
mile: 5:40
I am telling you this to show you that it can be done. It just takes practice. Every chance you get, go to the gym or find a place where you can work out diligently without distractions. Read the "oh no the basketball throw" sticky right above this. You can do it! YOu have three months to prepare and retake. Push yourself and stay positive!

For the most part, yes. They are different in that you are able to take the USNA test as many times as you like (from what my BGO has told me). At WP you have to go through your RC and get his/her approval. As you have probably read numerous times, think of the listed averages as minimums and the listed maximums as the normal: knowing that if you do not achieve a average by a small margin you will still pass. In regards to their maximums, I am still confused on the maximums for USNA because my BGO told me there were not any maximums, but I have read elsewhere that there are. So I am of no service in that department.

Just got a word from USMA that I passed everything except basketball throw... cry I have to retake this thing. (after I practice my butt off on basketball throw) but USNA didn't say anything yet. Hm.

The academy also informed me that the current CFA averages for the candidates are as follows:

Bball throw: 63ft
Pull ups: 8
Shuttle: 9 sec
Sit ups: 66
Push ups: 47
Mile run: 6:45 min

Pretty helpful information by USMA!

If you took the CFA for West Point recently, more than likely USNA won't have your CFA results. You will have to let USNA know you took CFA for West Point and have USNA request the CFA result from USMA. USMA and USNA don't automatically share CFA results.

Interesting. Those numbers are a bit different than the ones published here.

The CFA instruction pamphlet has not been updated for a while.

More the reason to aim high on your CFA than trying to figure out what the minimum scores are. When preparing for CFA, the average scores should not be the goal, rather a benchmark. It's pretty clear that West Point don't disclose failing scores and never stated anywhere that achieving average scores means you will pass CFA.

I just thought that it was interesting that some of the numbers were down. With the increased competition in recent years, I wouldn't expect any number to go down. However, I note that david's post says average for candidates but the instruction manual doesn't indicate if the averages are for candidates or appointees. Might be comparing apples and oranges.

You are right, the average can not be a goal but only a benchmark.

yep, what everyone said, I am going to shoot for higher score for every event on my retake. And USNA and USMA both received my 1st CFA scores simultaneously, and both were on file. Then two days later USMA said I failed cuz of my basketball throws, tells me I have been authorized to do a retake, and tells me what the current candidate averages were. USNA has my CFA on file, but it's been a little more than a week and yet I haven't got a word from them. Hm. Right now I'm going to assume that USNA considers my CFA a "passing" score.

USNA said i passed. USMA said i did not. There is certainly a different standards even if the test is universal for the academies.

It has been stated on the USNA forum that they are not concerned with the basketball throw. This seems to confirm at the least that they are less concerned with it.

When the ALO came to interview my son, she joked that the USMA takes the bball throw much more seriously than the USAFA because they don't throw grenades in the air force. :)
