Curious, I have not received any info on whether or not I have been 3 Q'd yet, or if they have even seen my file. If I have a prin. are they more likely to 3 Q me than if not? Just got the call yesterday saying I have it. Thanks!

P.S.- 34 Math, 30 Reading ACT scores, 3.64 GPA (mediocre at best, but still top 20% of class), XC runner, NHS member, 25 hours of volunteering/year, Boy's State Senator, Baseball player. Am I likely to get Q'd academically?

Class of '17 mid here.

Enjoy yourself. Sit back and relax. Focus on your studies (but not too hard), enjoy every single minute with your friends and family. And run.

Have you gotten the DODMERB situation cleared up yet? Have you taken the CFA? Assuming you have been medically and physically Q'd, I'd say you're in. USNA doesn't always send out notification of 3Q status, but you should know if you have been medically Q'd or not. Getting a principal nom is not a guarantee that you will get an appointment - you still have to be 3Q'd. Be that as it may, congrats! I'm guessing you're in!

Actually, even with 3Q and a principal you are not in--don't go counting the chickens from the eggs yet. The Admissions Board determines who are completely qualified in all areas and that list is 6000 names. That list is then sent to the Admissions OFFICE and it is there that the final cut is made and how they do it is a tightly guarded process that is not known by anyone outside of that inner sanctum. The law may reach to the Q'ing process or it may apply at the final appointment list----the Admissions Board and the qualifying process is an internal step in determining who to offer an appointment to and is not the final step. So, you maybe right and you maybe wrong (just like me) but this whole process is filled with shocks, surprises, and unknown turns with politics and sports thrown in. You are not there until you raise your hand on I-Day.

I can't speak for Navy, but for West Point if you are 3Qed and have a principal nomination you will get an appointment offer. West Point is not trying to accept best 1200 candidates, rather they are accepting 3Qed candidates within different categories based on established rules (i.e. if a MOC uses principal nomination method, if #10 kid on the OML is 3Qed and has the principal nomination, this kid will get an appointment over #1 to #9). They have some flexibilities to switch candidates between categories to get the candidate in, but not to reject them. If a candidate is declared fully qualified and has principle nomination for a Congressional district, West Point won't suddenly disqualify this candidate so they can take another qualified candidate that is not the principle nominee for the Congressional vacancy.

^^^ To the best of my knowledge, if you are 3Q AND are the principal NOM, you WILL get an appointment to USNA.

Yes, I did well on the CFA and am medically Q'd. Just waiting on the academic Q

But with USNA, how does one ever really know if they are 3'Q?
They seem to make it clear on their Facebook Admissions page, that they only give that information out in a letter of acceptance or denial.

I disagree, it means exactly that - he is in.

He can start counting all the eggs and chickens. :thumb:

To the OP - You know if you passed dodmerb, so that's one "q" down.

You can look at the average CF tests and make an educated guess that you passed if you exceeded those. (2 "q")

And if you have good SAT/ACT, baseball and XC, NHS member, etc - you can rest assured that you are also scholastically qualified. (3 "q")

Federal law states that a qualified principal nominee must be appointed.

You are in, congratulations!

USNA MUST offer an appointment to a principal nominee, if he/she is otherwise qualified (i.e. 3Q'd).

Judging by your ACT scores, GPA and extracurriculars, it looks like you should be scholastically qualified. 3 Q'd + principal nom = offer of appointment! Congrats!!

Just was told it is actually to USMA, my third choice. Still good news, but still looking for Navy. Hope I'm competitive enough for the national competition. Thanks everyone.

Cramer Nominations

Where all of Cramer's nominations principle nominations? Or just the one to Westpoint?

I ask because I received Congressmen Cramer's Naval Academy nomination, and while I was in a little bit of shock at having a Congressman call me on my cell phone, I didn't catch if he said it was a principle nomination.

I don't see how a candidate can be fully qualified (i.e 3Q'd), receive a principal nomination and not get an appointment.

Doesn't the academy have to take a designated principal nominee if they are 3Q'd?

Yes. Required by law. And who writes those laws? Why, the congressmen do. Surprised?

Only one candidate on a slate of 10 can be designated as "principal" - provided the nominating source decides to submit them in that fashion. Many do not.

I was asking because I received the Congressmen's only Naval Academy nomination, the OP received a nomination to Westpoint, and another person received a nomination to USAFA. Could we all be principle nominees, or only OP to Westpoint.

Yes, you could all be principal nominees. If you are, in fact, the only nominee to the Naval Academy then your a principal nominee in essence, whether the congress person so designated you or not. A MOC can have a principal nominee to each of the academies.

Off topic a bit, but I am always curious why any MOC will only submit one name. Are they seriously saying they had only 1 person that they would support for the SAs? Otherwise, they could have submitted a slate of 10 with a principal and an alternate as an option, or principal and ranked.

Just asking because if the candidates apply to all 3 MOCs, and the candidate that got the nom to USNA from them, but gets one to USAFA from another MOC and decides to go to the AFA, the MOC would have nobody left to be appointed. Which impo is unfair to his constituents if indeed he had more than 1 person that would be 3 q'd.

I understand it is his right by law, just saying I wonder about the motivation to do the noms in this manner.

Back on topic, kinnem is right that in essence it is a principal because if the MOC submits a slate they will be charged 1 appointment to the highest WCS candidate that is 3 Q'd. You probably will get a BFE shortly after you are boarded because they (admissions) will not have to wait for any other candidate to be boarded to see who wins the appointment. You are the only one, thus you will have the highest WCS.
