I am a high school junior with good grades. I take part in drama club, marching band and concert band. I have taken college music theory and I am a boy scout. I will achieve the rank of Eagle Scout in about a month or so. I am wondering if I stand a chance? I would also like to know where I should begin. There is a lot of information out there and it is a bit confusing. I am also new to the forum. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. I would like to attend either USMA or USNA. Please help!!!!

Start

Grades - unweighted above 3.5
Classes - AP, IB, college prep (CALC, Chemistry, Physics, TRIG...)
Sports - get a letter, shoot for being a TM CPT
Leadership - Eagle Scout, Boys/Girls State, President of at least one club
Physical - MAX the CFA (train now)
SAT/ACT - SAT Mean @630 in all areas, ACT Mean is @29

These things will make you competitive. You should excel in at least one or two areas to set yourself apart

Read through all the stickies at the top of the forums. If your MOC sponsors an Academy Day in your area be sure to attend. Also look into AROTC and NROTC as backup plans. And then have backup plans to those as well.

Hey Spart...I think the first best place to start will be the sticky notes on this forum starting with "a lot of information". They will answer a TON of information! Then refer to this website. There is a lot of solid information shared by students and parents. If you have specific questions...feel free to ask! We are here to help! Just know it is a long and detailed process and there are so many great young men and women on this journey. If you truly have a passion for this...be prepared to sacrifice and go the extra mile! Best wishes!

Contact and apply as soon as you understand what is needed. If you want to be an officer, then contact ROTC as well at cadet command for US Army.

As a junior, you will be able to start the first part of the application on the West Point website after the new year. For now, do your research.

I agree with rest of the people. And get that West Point candidate book ESPECIALLY. I bought it long ago and it really helped me out how to get things started my Junior year. :shake:

I don't have the book, but my recommendation is get the book if you can't spend some time on the admissions website, attend local West Point briefings, and/or get in touch with your liaison officer.

I have been a FFR for about 10 years now. It might sound too simple, there is no secret in the admissions process, with an exception of failing CFA score. If I wrote a book on how to increase your chance of getting accepted by West Point

1. Read and follow West Point Admissions Office instructions
2. Read and follow MOC's instruction on their nomination process.
3. Get in touch with your liaison officer
4. Start early, your senior year is not the best time to start
5. Get highest class ranking/SAT/ACT scores you can.
6. Seek leadership positions
7. Play varsity sports or equivalent.
8. Ask questions
9. Hope and pray.

I don't want to be judgmental, but I know some of your peers get it as they complete their application by early September of their senior year where as some of your peers contact me now and ask me what they should do.

Read up on West Point's Summer Leaders Experience (SLE) (http://www.usma.edu/admissions/SitePages/Summer.aspx) and apply in January of your junior year. If you are selected you will get to experience life as a cadet for a week and see if it's something you really want to pursue.

USNA has the Summer Seminar program, also for rising seniors. Apply in January of your junior year. http://www.usna.edu/Admissions/events.html
