Very off-topic from the other posts on this forum, but I was just looking through the athletics for West Point and saw the parachute team. When I did a CVW at the USNA I met someone who was on their skydiving team, and I was told it is very expensive. Does anyone know the costs? I am very interested in this, as I like to try new things, and think that would be a great opportunity to both use as my mandatory athletics at the academy, as well as do something new. I have never done anything like that before, so does that disqualify me from joining, or would they teach me how to do it, so I can compete just like everyone else? I can't imagine that most people would have prior background in skydiving. Thanks
 
Parachute

Can't speak to the cost, but two other big considerations are time commitment and competition to make the team. Basically, all your breaks will be spent with the parachute team so the time commitment is very demanding reportedly more so than most varisty sports. This year over 100 plebes showed up to learn about the team so there is lots of competition and the process is rigourous with physical tests along with essays and letters of recommendation need from both inside and outside the academy.

I tried out and I didn't make it. That being said...

-No, you do not need prior experience.
-They always say time commitment is a big thing, so you should have good grades and be good at time management.
-You need to be able to represent yourself and the Academy well. The parachute team gets a lot of attention so they have to always be on top of their game.

That being said, it is an AWESOME team to join. And I firmly believe that if you REALLY want it (just like with everything in life), you will get it. Tryouts are always in January I think so you will already have a semester worth of grades, athletic performance and USMA experience which they will look at.
 
So what exactly does a tryout consist of, being you don't need prior experience?

You won't have to jump out of a plane/helicopter during tryouts. They test you in other ways to check for a few things, such as how much you really want to be a part of team, do you have a good personality, etc. In other words, they test you to see if you would be a good fit for the team.

A buddy of mine said the license (which I guess is the base cost... I don't know what else you pay for on a regular basis if you pay for anything at all) costs around $2500.
