Hi all,

Just out of curiosity, if one were to enroll in the Early Commissioning Program at say Marion Military Institute, after commissioning in order to go active duty could they transfer to VMI or the Citadel?

Why would you do that? I can think of lots of reaons not to do so- not many why you would. To begin with - At VMI at least (and I think the Citadel)- you will spend another year as a rat. Doesn't matter if you got a Silver Star before hand you still will be a Rat. Then- while you may get two years of credits to transfer, but you will not really be a first classman. You will be a Third Classman, living on the third stoop. Your class will graduate 2 years after you. All of the things that you build up for at VMI throughout your Cadetship - you won't experience. And that guarantee of AD when you graduate is conditional on the PMS recommending you. But he won't even know you.

According to your sig block- you have already been accepted to VMI and the Citadel. If those are the places you want to graduate from- then start there and finish there- your plan would really have no benefits that I can see.

I know you haven't been accepted at VMI yet because nobody has, but you might as well just start out in the big leagues! Why go to Marion and go through the transferring when you've got a fast track to an SMC?

ECP

Jarhead1775,
We had a transfer from NMMI come to VMI--he was a commissioned officer (in the reserves) and he went through the ratline as a 2nd Lieutenant. It was interesting to see 3rd classmen disciplining a Lieutenant, but he stayed the course and graduated early. So can it be done? Yes. However, I agree with the others here in that I'm not sure this is the best route. I'd recommend going with VMI or selecting one of the military/civilian SMCs like citadel, norwich, VA tech, or A&M right from the start. Either way, good luck...

ECP to SMC

I know the original question was regarding transferring to the Citadel or VMI, but to clarify for those considering ECP route: the more common choice for an ECP LT wishing to "lock in" active duty by attending a SMC is to transfer to one of the programs with a civilian component (Norwich, Texas A&M, North Georgia, Virginia Tech). The Norwich Guidon had an interesting article on the subject and North Georgia has a web page for ECP's.

The citadel also offers this civilian component, and they offer the 2+2 program.

ECP

After some further thought on this, I would advise someone who has done the ECP route and wanted the SMC regular commission to go the civilian route at citadel, norwich, VT, A&M, NG instead of VMI. Hate to admit it and steer someone away from the Institute, but this is about providing sound advice to potential cadets/students, and those routes would be a whole lot more enjoyable and relaxed than being in the ratline!

I was not aware of the Citadel's program. Looks like it's an evening program which provides an option that might be attractive to some.

Apparently, there is a day program as well, and there is also the online grad degree route for those interested... www.citadel.edu/massldrs
It's all about options. (watch out though, the el cid online corps of cadets is a hot-button topic)
But again, it's all about options and as you said, this might be attractive to some.

Day program is for a handful of Navy and Marine veterans that attend classes withe the Corps of Cadets. Program was created after WW2. Online program program is being offered for the graduate school only

Guys I was asking purely out of curiosity, there is no way I would do that, just wanted to know lol but thanks for the responses! I've already been accepted to several SMC's, just need to hear back from USNA.

NAS likes to spread disinformation.

Information

Just passing along the information--and good luck, Jarhead, with whatever you decide.

The Citadels evening undergraduate program is only open to people who already have an associate degree from select community colleges in South Carolina, you cant just transfer into it from anywhere. Their corps has gotten numerous transfers from NMMI and Marion over the years.

Current in the USAR for 5 years and I'm finishing up my bachelor degree in the fall of 2014. My gpa is going to be in the range of 2.7-2.9. I want to get my commission, but I want to go active duty while I'm officer. I know the ROTC and OCS route too they don't guarantee you active duty status when you graduate. I've did a little research on my own if I decide to go to ECP route. By going thru that route and once Ive transfer to a SMC school and get active duty when I graduate. It's no guarantee I get into a grad school program with ROTC. I know going thru ECP to a SMC will.

I want to know should I go to a ECP like Marion military institute and transfer to a SMC school like Norwich or North Georgia to get active duty as a officer.
