Question regarding SAT scores

If your critical reading SAT score does not meet the minimum, will you not be considered for an Appointment? I'm an Asian female, and basically English is my second language. I have exceeded all of USMMA's requirements for GPA, class courses, and math SAT score. I also come from a specialty center high school that is well known within the state. I take part in student government, extra curricular activities, volunteer services, honor societies, sports, and I have two jobs. However, will having a low critical reading SAT score cause me to not have a chance at receiving an Appointment?

On the brighter side, I made it to the second step of getting a nomination interview.

I'm also planning on taking the ACT in December.

Thank you,

More than likely no. Your application will be read, but you would not be considered for an appointment. You must by Medically, Academically, and Physically qualified. It is commonly referred to 3Q on the Forum. You would not be academically qualified. Make sure if you take the ACT your composite and English scores are at least a 23 and your Math is a 24. I would also recommend retaking your SAT if possible. You could also look into buying a study guide or going to prep classes. Both have pros and cons.

Also, I found this note on the USMMA website: *The basic standardized SAT Reasoning Test or standardized ACT qualifying scores for admission will be determined by the Academy for each entering class.

This could be an asset to you, but with competition increasing and smaller entering class sizes, I do not see the Admissions Office lowering the minimum. If you demonstrate potential on the other portions of your applications, then you may be considered for Prep School. Prep School is where you go to the New Mexico Military Institute for a year usually on scholarship from the USMMA. If you meet the GPA requirement (2.0), you will then receive an appointment to Kings Point the following year. If this option interests you, I would get in touch with the Admissions Office to express your interest. Also, LTC Donald Hanak is the director for Service Academy Prep at NMMI. He is very active on the Service Academy Preparatory Schools forum and he is very willing to talk to candidates.

Hope this helps! Best of luck!

I think you need to call admissions and discuss this with them. They can help better than random answers on this forum:smile:

Do what you can to get it over the line. Minority female is a huge box to check on top of all the other accomplishments. If you can't get the SAT over the line you sound like a prime candidate for prep school.

Thank you for the responses! I guess I'll just have to wait til tomorrow when SAT scores are released to see if I pass the requirement.

Is being Asian considered a minority at USMMA? Or counting as a diversity applicant? I know at WP that is not the case.

Advice on talking to admissions is very sound, however, I'd not expect a concrete answer, as it does depend on many factors, and those can vary every year.

My question is why is it a big advantage that she is a minority female? Who cares what she is? If she is qualified, fine. If she isn't, then don't make her qualified or competitive because she is a female and minority. It sounds so stupid saying its a big "square check" if she is female, and minority.

Admissions wants to diversify their class size. They have projected goals for each class on how many people they have: females, minorities, makes, athletes, etc,. So it's good if you're both a female and a minority because you'll be wanted more. However, if you are subpar in grades and the like, it will not be in your favor. But I've seen candidates with subpar athletics but outstanding grades and leadership as minorities that do receive appointments. HSMMA has a diversity recruiting officer who works directly with such minorities. It's also there to give them the chances that would not be afforded to them at other colleges (I believe).

Regardless of what diversity box you check all candidates must meet the minimum requirements. Competition with highly qualified candidates is intense so meeting the minimums is essential.

converting scores

Make sure to take and submit the ACT score as well. Sometimes a student is just under the requirement for the SAT in Math... but their good ACT score is somehow converted over to the SAT requirement. That is what happened to our DS. Good luck to you.
