The Citadel wins "The Military Classic of the South" for the seventh straight time defeating VMI 31-10 and retaining the Silver Shako Trophy. The bulldogs have won 11 of the last 13 meetings and lead the all time series 37-30-2

Good game - 10-10 until the last 12 minutes when VMI just fell apart.

Good game, the VMi cadets did their best

That may be true, but at least all the players on VMI's team were cadets. Biggest difference I noticed in Charleston this past weekend (I was there) was how many citadel graduates at the parties were never cadets. And just recently the citadel began offering on-line degrees--seriously, on-line degree programs where you get a degree from the citadel without ever being a cadet, or even on campus... Please, keep that shako, this rivalry used to be a sports contest between two military schools...

Seriously, On-Line

Seriously? Seriously... on-line degrees...

Hey. It's the future! Did you know 15 minutes can save you 15% or more on your car insurance? No? Well, did you ever hear of the online Corps of Cadets?

Nas I think your being a little unfair bud. We have to understand that in this day and age higher level education is a business; moreover, for a business to flourish a traditional business model cannot be executed while expecting the same results. Like any brand we have to redefine and explore different profit avenues for sustainability into the future. Lest we forget that the state of south carolina is providing peanuts for higher education. South Carolina is not a state where people would immediately move for job opportunities- its a place where people retire. For the Citadel to continue as a college it had to make changes. The school is still the same, the traditions are the same, the legacy is the same, what has changed are civilians on campus who have no access or no direct interaction with the barracks or cadets. In addition, if you have a non cadet graduate interview for a civilian position and has "Citadel" on his resume I'm sure hes gonna get asked cadet questions. When he responds otherwise-the interviewer can make up his own mind.

Gentleman, we have a lot of prospective candidates on this forum who are looking at both schools. Stop the bickering, stop the playing around. If we are the first points of contact for these high school graduates then I would feel sorry as to how I'm representing my alma mater and the legacy it created. Lets lock it up. we live in the same country, fight the same wars, and spill the same blood. If you think one institution is better than the other- keep that **** to yourselves.

Just thought I'd chip in...

I have a friend whose son is a cadet at The Citadel and on the wrestling team, but he decided from day one he wanted the rigorous education without plans to be in the military. He is a squared away young man. I believe he will graduate this year.

Understand your point and somewhat agree with most of what you're saying, but disagree with some points as well. Bottom line: prospective employers shouldn't have to ask "cadet questions." More to the point, there is great value in being from an institution where all graduates, no matter their previous position or status, share in the same type of experience. It's what bonds the graduates together and makes for an outstanding alumni network. You can't quite relate and understand unless you've been through it, but there is a significant difference.

As a parent of a player, I will tell you that all members of the team are either Citadel cadets or graduates who are attending graduate school. If they are red shirted for a year, the NCAA allows for players to retain playing eligibility into a fifth year. But this is not really the issue.

In my opinion, if you are not affiliated with, or have some personal knowledge about a school you should not be commenting about that school. Again in my opinion, a poster does not make his own school look better by slandering another.

All of these programs have something positive to offer for their students and graduates. All of them have a proud tradition which their current students work to honor.

As a graduate of The Citadel I can tell you that the evening college and graduate school are insignificant in the grand scheme of things. They are simply programs that are offered to residents and provide additional revenue for the school. I always find it humorous when others comment on our school and alumni network and really have no clue. I would never comment on the VMI or Norwich experience as I haven't a clue. For those looking at a senior military college I would not let the silly comments of uninformed members of this board to factor into your decision.

I also find it humorous when others comment about schools or alumni networks when they have no clue. Especially when they hang everything on football or other sports scores... and also when they're comparing apples to oranges. Bottom line, prospective students deserve to know the differences between all these fine institutions. Personally, I don't care what paths the other institutions choose to follow, but I'm proud of the fact that future employers don't need to ask VMI graduates if they were cadets... Perspective cadets deserve to know the differences, and frankly, some may choose to go to schools which are not all-military or all-cadet--the decision is theirs, but they should have the info and know there are differences...

NAS your postings are petty, classless and immature; you aren't exactly a shining example of your 'institute', apparently they don't teach respect and manners. Your judgement and common sense are sorely lacking, NAS must stand for 'Nothing Above the Shoulders'.

C'mon Bob80, I've seen your other posts, and you probably shouldn't throw stones--your latest comments don't help potential cadets at all and they certainly don't make you (or your school) look very classy. :yllol:
Seriously, stop getting your feathers so ruffled, I'm NOT highlighting your school's inadequacies, I'm simply drawing attention to differences between these schools.

I want to correct a previous post.

DS is home for the holiday, and told me there is one individual on the team who is neither a cadet nor a graduate.

This player is an active duty member participating in a degree program which will result in a commission.

just curious which team you are talking about, not aware there are any AD athletes at present but may be wrong. The Citadel has about 60 MECEP and STA-21s on campus and per NCAA rules as full time students they are eligible to play varsity sports though its not common, I believe one was on the rifle team recently.
