OK, I just heard from my recently-returned-to-the-Hill cadets and they are all abuzz about the Superintendent's Pin and now I am to send them big "You Got An Award" packages. :shake: Can anyone tell me what exactly one has accomplished to win this Pin? Does it really (in the opinion of any cheap-as-me parents out there) require a gift, or a simple pat on the back, or even an "I figured as much"?

Both twins left me garbled cell phone messages and now aren't picking up so I need more info!

Thanks!

"Cadets who achieve at least a 3.0 GPA are recognized by the Dean of the Faculty and wear a small silver star on their uniform. Cadets who are recognized for achievement in military performance by the Commandant of Cadets wear a silver wreath. Cadets who are recognized for excellence in physical education by the Director of Athletics wear a silver lightning bolt. Those cadets on all three lists are recognized by the Superintendent and wear the star enclosed in the wreath between two small lightning bolts."

I remember reading this so I looked it up on academyadmissions.com and this was under "Academics FAQ." Maybe this is what you are looking for?? It sounds like a pretty big deal to me... hope this helps.

Oh! Thanks for that info. Well, I might send them a coupon for a pizza or something. :)

If they are on the Sup's list that means that they made the Dean's list, plus the Commandant's List for miltary performance, and the Athletic Director's List. It's equivalent to a USFAF "hat trick," and they get to wear a pin this semester on their service dress (a combination of of a star, wreath and lightening bolts). It's a pretty select club. Congrats...they are off to a great start. This may also help with summer program assignments...if they want jump they'll be apt to get it.

How is military performance determined?

It used to be a MPA >3.0. Now it may be top quarter regardless of your MPA (military performance average).

Thanks again, for answering on both sites, gasdoc.

I wish I could talk to those twins and shake their virtual hands! I'm proud of those boys! I didn't realize that summer or other placements might be GPA dependent. Good to know!

You should be proud as the percentage of cadet's who make all three lists is actually quite small. Next time you're out there just look at the left pocket area of the cadet's service dress and you'll know immediately where each individual cadet stands.

Interesting. I did not know about the "Pin" thing. Wonder how long that's been in place. I'm familiar with dean's list, superintendent, commandant, etc... list/awards. I just dropped my son off at the academy. I just go home about an hour ago. He called me half way home. He's just finished moving into his new room, and finally got online to see how he did with his finals. He never mentioned a "Pin". Then again; my son is pretty modest. I'll be talking/PMing him in a day or two. I'll see what he knows.

Hey "SwordFightinMama" (Fencersmother). Did you all and the twins and the rest of the family have a good Christma-Hana-Kwanzaa??? Hope so. It was tough taking the boy back to the academy. But we try and see him at least every so often. With football season over; we probably won't see too much of him unless a long weekend or until spring break. Later... Mike....

Be proud Fencersmom! It is an accomplishment. They are at the Top of Their class along with a certain Hornet we all know. Getting one or two of the lists during doolie year, but making the Supe's list a lot tougher. Like Gasdoc said the MPA is your military grade, and they have made some changes to the calculation. Potter made AC dean and Athletic the first semester last year, and Comm's list second semester so no hat trick here. This year she has been happy to stay off recondo, and pass all her classes. Congradulations to the boys.

I guess I understand the Military grade list. But what entails the "Athletic" list??? How does that affect IC's who sort of have their "Athletics" pretty much planned out for them? Thx.... Mike....

It is a combination of the PFT/AFT and ath grades. Last year Potter had to take Self/Defense, and weight lifting. Her Ath deans list was determined by a composite score of the three.

Interesting. I'll have to ask my son how he did in those other areas next time I chat with him. Like I said; he's pretty modest and doesn't really tell us any accomplishments unless we ask. I had to have him promise to call/text when he found out his academic grades. Thanks.... Mike......

Just got an e-mail...ours has maintained a star and a wreath but he too added a pair of bolts to make the Sup's list last semester. Heading upstairs to tell his mother.

Thanks Mike, we had a great couple weeks. Not enough snow to make the drive to the slopes out east, but kids did some sledding on our little hill. Had a blast at the gun range with their little varmint guns, golfed twice (in December!!!), and saw a couple movies. Boys mostly wanted to just hang out at home with their family and friends, and both were sad, and excited, to return.

I had forgotten how much food they and their older brother can consume! I know each of the twins can eat about 4000 calories a day and stay slim, but had forgotten how much cooking that meant for their mother! Still, I would rather cook for them all day than do 'bout anything else!

Hope to talk to them in the next couple days and see how their room moves went.

Congrats to your son, too, gasdoc! And Mike, you'll have to let us know when your footballer reports on his pin status!

I've never been on the supt's list. ;) However, I was very pleased with my semester results! That's all that counts now for jobs (still matters for grad/med school of course). At this point for the 2 digs, our class rank and stratification with the board order of merit will be here in 2 months! Big time for us!

But, back to the topic at hand, congrats to the twins! Have to say congrats to the one living next to me. :)

Sorry thought you had made the Supe's list a couple of times...my mistake. As Hornet said though congradulations to twins.

Just found out that TwinB did not get sups pin, but got it for academics and for athletics. Apparently, he missed the military by 4/1000- you read that right: four one-thousandths - of a point!!!! Oh, is he disappointed! He figures it must have been his first uniform inspection or something he just can't put his finger on. Four one-thousandths! Frustrating! Still happy to have the other two.

mmm, that's by the old system. The new system is the top 25%, so 3.0 doesn't matter anymore (supposedly).
