My son just found out today that he'll be going to Guyana in June 2014 for a month. No details on what 'type' of assignment this one will be.

Just curious, do the cadets have any choice of what country when they apply or is it random?

Congratulations to those who have been selected for CULP. Wherever you are sent, it's a great opportunity to broaden your cultural awareness. Another benefit is the chance to work AROTC cadets from battalions all over the United States.

I just noticed that CULP has its own Facebook page.

https://www.facebook.com/ArmyCULP

Also, many of the past missions have had their own Facebook pages, and most future missions are likely to as well. For example, search on the google machine for CULP Guyana, CULP Vietnam or CULP Kazakhstan.

DS's unit had seven selected. (1) MS III, (3) MSII's and (3) MSI's. Good opportunity for younger cadets.

They were told there would be another list in January. Last year his unit sent 13 I believe.

I'm pretty sure they get to choose a "region". My son picked South America and was assigned to Guyana. The CULP contingent in 2009 had 600 cadets and they built a medical clinic and a school-house. My daughters boyfriend from last year requested South America as well but was sent to Thailand (which he loved). His assignment was to teach English ala Robin Williams in 'Good Morning Vietnam'.

My daughter was chosen to go to the Ukraine in 2012.

Romania bound

DS, just called to say he is going to Romania in June. He's pretty excited. 3 MSI received CULP. One going to Poland not sure about the other. Congrats to all.

CULP pay

Instead of starting a new thread I thought I would piggyback on this one since my question is about CULP.
1) Do cadets get paid while in the CULP program? if so any idea how much?
2) Since they are subject to the UCMJ and I believe are AD for the duration of CULP ( please correct me if I am wrong) then in the event of an injury are they covered under the Army health insurance.
3) I assume all travel expenses and room and board are picked up by the Army as well?

Thanks in advance for any information.

Sheriff3, my brother (MSII) just received word that he is going to Romania, too. He leaves around May 20th and returns around the first of July. Who knows, it's a small world, maybe they will run into each other :thumb:
In answer to your questions, my brother said that they did get paid a stipend, don't know how much, but I could ask him. A 400k life policy during the trip, Room, Board, and R/T flight are covered, as well. I'd have to ask him about health ins, but I assume that's covered, too. He also said that it will accrue points for the OML. Google CULP and Romania together, you will find Facebook pages and Youtube video of past assignments.

Congrats to everyone!

Just don't plan on seeing your pay anytime soon. DS returned from CULP/Thailand in June and still hasn't been paid.

A lot will depend on your HR person. My son received his CULP money during the first week of the trip. I believe it was around 800.00. He also received about 300.00 CLIP money when he returned to school. They will get some travel expense money to and from the airports.

Agree that it depends on HR person. My son went to Latvia last June, and got his $800+ when he returned to campus in September.

When he left last June he did not know what to expect. He ended up spending a few weeks in a joint training exercise with forces from all of the Baltic countries, as well as some National Guard troops, that were also in Latvia. He ended his trip painting a local high school, without too much supervision. One only needed to look at the amount of paint on his clothes, to understand that it probably did not end up being the best paint job.

DS believes both local and brigade level come into play when reimbursements happen. We just figure it's great to know now how it might be in the future and thus the importance of having cash reserves for this journey.

They will be taken care of... However, my mentee ended up getting an IV in a Latvian hospital. Don't worry, they'll be taken care of...

Jcleppe, you referenced this: can you please tell me what it is?

300.00 CLIP money

Thanks.
