Project Go

My son wanted to apply for CULP but was unable to this year. He has applied for Project Go instead. Can someone explain to me (mom) how the scholarships work? I know he will get more specific information when (if) he is accepted but I would like to do some advance planning. The program he applied to as his first choice says that there are scholarships for tuition for ROTC students and partial aid for room and board. Is there a rough idea of how much we should plan out-of-pocket for a Project Go summer session?

Our DS did Project GO last summer (UW-Madison). Tuition was paid in full, there was a $275.00 stipend for airfare, room and board was covered, and there was I think about $500.00 for expenses (meals etc.). I can't recall exactly but it might have been another $500.00 out of pocket for expenses, it was an 8 week program.

I did an 8-week Project GO overseas in 2011. The travel/tuition/room/board were all paid for. We each had the option to receive a food stipend and be responsible for feeding ourselves, or to forego the food stipend and our host families would feed us.

AFROTC also paid me a language bonus for the language training I received as a part of it. But i'm not sure if that money is still around.

As far as out-of-pocket money...all I really HAD to pay for was souvenirs and the occasional meal downtown. But of course well all ended up blowing just about all the money we had on weekends in the downtown clubs/bars.

DS is also due CLIP money for 4 semesters of Russian...hasn't seen that yet...

I think I applied in Jan/Feb, heard that I was selected in Mar/Apr, and we left in Jun.

Thanks for the answers. One more question. According to the site, if selected for Project Go during the summer and if the cadet is on scholarship, there is an additional ADSO incurred. How much more time is it? What happens if the cadet ultimately doesn't get (or doesn't choose) active duty?

Whoa, hold up a sec. My Project Go coordinator said nothing about that stipulation. Where do you see that it adds more time to your contact?

It was news to me too. In the thread on CULP, someone posted this link. The ADSO information is in the second paragraph of monetary incentives.

Extension of Benefits for Summer Language Courses – ROTC students on scholarship may elect to use a semester of their ROTC scholarship benefits to fund summer study. Cadets may also elect to have their scholarship cover an additional semester (summer session) for language study. However, cadets who do so will incur an additional active duty service commitment (ADSO) for each enrolled summer. Example – a cadet with a four year scholarship who uses AROTC scholarship funding for a summer will have to stay on active duty for an additional period, to be determined by their ROTC scholarship requirements.

It is a confusing statement. On the one hand, a summer Project Go session isn't a real semester but on the UW website, it specifically calls the funding "scholarship".

Oooh, I see. That's not for the project go scholarship. Cadets on ROTC scholarship can apply to have their scholarship benefits (tuition, fees) applied to a summer abroad to help pay for a language program. If you do that then yes, you will incur some extra time. But there isn't an extended service obligation attached to the Project Go scholarship itself. They are just mentioning an alternate way to pay for summer semesters abroad. The max a ROTC scholarship will go is 5 yrs (10 semesters), if you are a tech major with a 4 yr scholarship, you can extend it to 4.5 or 5 yr depending on your academic plan, you just have to tell them early enough (generally put in in your Form 48 for AFROTC or 104R for Army, if you think you may want to do something ROTC/Language related during the summer, it's best to put in just a blank summer block in between regular semester schedules so they know you are considering it. You can always fill it in later, but a little more explanation goes into a block that magically appears on your form a semester before you plan to use ROTC funds). They're offering a similar extension for cadets taking a language as incentive to further their studies.

It confused me since it addressed summer abroad separately later in the section. Thanks. One less thing to worry about.
