Son had eye exam today. Looking for any historical perspective.

Son's eye doctor was rushed and straight off the bat said "this will be a quick screen" we went through this last yr and was surprised at how rushed he was. Son followed the instructions and did not wear contacts three days before. He does not own current glasses so didn't bring glasses (big mistake!) he was -4 in both eyes but just borrowed his dads glasses the past few days.

Regarding Color vision he was given 0 out of 14 though he did get some correct (I was sitting there) that should still be ok because he passed vivid red/green.

However, when it was time for the depth perception portion son was not given an opportunity to put his contacts in. I asked the eye doctor if the depth correction test should be with corrected vision. He said yes but your kid didn't bring any glasses. I said we weren't told to bring glasses. He wasnt allowed to put his contacts in. He got 3 out of 9. I immediately called our family eye doctor who said son was just there a few months ago for a thorough eye exam, has been going there for six years and does not have a depth perception problem. I made a new apt with family eye dr to redo the opto Dodmerb form and fax it in.

I do not know if he will pass, get a remedial or go straight to hoping for a waiver. This is just as it pertains to Army ROTC. Any past history of info. Though every case is different and I know no one here is on the board.

You should pursue this with Cadet Command. By his own words he did not follow procedures. Don't know if report from your eye doctor will help but it cannot hurt.

My eye doctor too said it would be a quick exam, and I didn't do well on the double vision tests, although I've never had problems. I think the exam centers don't really regard DODMERB kids with the level of importance as they treat their normal patients, but I guess I can't expect much else.....

I was watching this going down bad. I called Dodmerb from the parking lot-I didn't even know the scores at this point. They suggested getting the form refilled by family eye dr. They did not say it would help or not. At this point we don't even know if it is a not-pass for army.

As usual, you're on top of it! I got a chuckle out of calling from the parking lot. Didn't even wait to get home. And you must have a DoDMERB phone number in your cell. Awesome. I'm confident it will all workout. Just another (unnecessary) hurdle to jump, but I know you will make short work of it.

Thanks Kinnem,
I actually emailed that dodmerb consultant that someone posted on this forum about, (he used to be in charge over there) who called me right back who was extremely helpful! More hurdles but still on the track...

Mine said the same thing, and I also got the same feeling. My medical exam was also a similar experience. In my case, it worked to my advantage, but I definitely got the vibe that they wanted to move me through quickly and with minimal effort.

Not that anybody was rude or unprofessional, it just felt very different than I expected.

I knew he was going to have some color deficiency (though he ended up passing vivid red/green) so I researched every single detail of the vision test (plus I like to know every detail of every thing...). It is very frustrating because in the directions it states:

http://www.apd.army.mil/pdffiles/r40_29.pdf
"Item 17 through 26. Before conducting vision test, find out is the examinee is wearing contact lenses. Have the examinee remove them for those tests where lenses would obviously cause erroneous results, such as items17 and 19 (uncorrected vision). If the examinee usually wears corrective lenses (spectacles or contacts), have the examine ewear them during depth perception and color vision testing; however, make sure that lenses are not “color corrective.”

Its also confusing because you see people posting for remedial for depth perception -and obviously it is a factor or they wouldn't test for it, but according to the updates it is not listed in Medical Standards for Appointment, Enlistment, or Induction in the Military Services .

at this point son is redoing them at our expense and resending the opto form. Luckily the dodmerb eye dr noted that he did them wrong (he noted that son did not bring correction-which wasnt true I told him he has contacts and asked if he could put them in and the eye doc said no he cant have contacts in for three days...uggghhh.....seriously, thats before hand, not during the depth perception part.....)

Just an update:
We took son to his eye dr who has been going to since he was 12. We brought the Dodmerb form for him to fill out. Eye Dr gave thorough exam (he refused to test color though as he said it was not appropriate for him to test color without having a Falant test-but son already passed the vivid red/green part so should be ok since he doesn't want air or water)

Regarding depth perception he said it was completely unprofessional to test depth perception without correction and that is is very unlikely to pass that without correction. (then he want on to grumble along the lines of Packer's previous post). He gave son three different depth perception tests jsut to make sure (instead of just the one that was given at Dodmerb Opto) he got a 100% on all three tests. Now we are just hoping Dodmerb takes his results.

this has been the most stressful of two years straight of two kids going through this process....Im hoping my next kiddo to be a racecar driver...

^^^^ Thanks for the update. Glad to hear things are progressing.
You know its a rough process when a Mom hopes a kid becomes a race car driver!!!!
