Greetings,

Can anyone advise if a patellar dislocation is grounds for a MERB DQ? The regulation reads something to the effect..."history of any knee dislocation".... Does this include patellar as well?
There are both a true knee dislocation..very severe..and the much more common. .less severe patellar dislocation.

DD*dislocated patella in sports injury over 18 months ago....no ligament damage and all intact...no lose or foreign object...no derangement....physical therapy eight sessions then released back to unrestricted actvity. ..no brace required.Playing competive high school varsity and very select club travel sports with no pain or any reoccurrence. No other injuries past or present.

The question is...and sorry it took so long to get here..... Does the USCGA grant waivers for this type of past injury to athletes??*DD was offered appointment early november during EA1...

DoDMERB sent all records pertaining to injury at their request last week... Thanks in advance.....

USCGA had granted waivers for all sorts of things. I have classmates who have waivers for ACLs torn multiple times and severe shoulder dislocations as well. So my answer would be that it is possible that your DS could be given a waiver, particularly because he has been able to be completely active. No on can really give you a straight answer on this forum as none of us work in the Clinic but I would advise you to not lose hope, I imagine that a large portion of each class has a waiver of some sort.

How about a waiver for flat feet?

USCGA will request a waiver if your DD is a competitive candidate, especially since she was offered an appointment 2 months ago. She just needs to go through the process. Good luck!

Question for anyone: If an existing ROTC student has an injury during Winter recess (broken bone in hand), should he notify DoDMERB? Or his commanding officer? He is applying to Air Force and Naval Academy and wants to follow procedures. The injury is already splinted and the doctor said there will be no problem with movement or use after healing. Just curious if anyone has had this issue and what the chain of command regarding information reporting should be. (I know it is grammatically incorrect, but you get the idea, I hope)

Having done AFROTC while applying to Academies...

Make sure you tell the officer cadre (ie your LT) or senior NCO as soon as possible via email, and do not wait to tell them when you come back. They will usually guide you from there. My experience, and the experience of other cadets with medical and ROTC, was to let the command cadre handle it, and they will tell you what to do from there.

I DO NOT SPEAK FOR DODMERB OR ROTC.

Just my 2 cents.

Thanks Trumpet. I will tell him to do just that. I hope this doesn't ruin his chances of an appointment, but it is important that he address this immediately regardless of effect. The break is already healing and there shouldn't be any problem afterward (according to his doctor). The DoDMERB process is a little intimidating and you wonder if they sometimes look for reasons to disqualify people because the the vast number of applicants. Thanks again.

Haha read my sig haha

It can be. When he/she goes back to school make sure the DODMERB wheel gets turning as quickly as possible. If a remedial is not necessary, and a DQ is given, make sure they try and get the remedial/waiver done ASAP.

No waiver before R-Day/I-Day, no appt. Don't wait. Get it done :thumb:

Commission is the goal, regardless of source!

My DS had same, injury both knees. It was waived by AROTC. he had also applied to sea going academies but never had the knee issue addressed owing to color vision issues which seemed to be non-starters (in spite of what the official rules may say.) I suspect the knees would have not been a problem. he had full clearance from his Orthopedic Dr.
I think you can rest easy if your Dr. has cleared you for athletics, but expect a DQ. You have already been asked for more info. (You will be asked again if there is anything more to submit at the start of the waiver process.) If you are a competitive applicant in all other respects the admission people will ask for a waiver review. Since you have an offer, I'm sure the request will happen automatically.
I am confident that if ortho injuries were big problems, none of the schools would be able to field any sports teams.
Good luck. don't worry (easy for me to say), and let the process work through.
If Dr or PT did not review stretching program specific to patella dislocation, ask for some info from them. The "IT band" (according to the PTs my DS saw) was his problem and is likely the problem with your DD. It is a muscle running from the outside hip area across the thigh to the top of the patella. If it is tight it pulls the patella out of alignment, and then a stress from sports (and some inherent shortcomings in some people's knee anatomy) causes the dislocation. It needs to be stretched in a specific way regularly.
