I know that majority of things at USNA are provided, but would you recommend chasing small monetary scholarships to help offset certain living costs? Is this unnecessary (or immoral) or common?

My DD will be chasing those scholarships as recommended by her B&G officer. :)
 
Thanks for the question. We are in the same boat but many of the Scholarship offers my DS have recieved are fairly large. My DS intent is to go to the USNA, this is his first choice, but we must have a plan B. So we have not declined any financial merit based scholarships. So any guidance on how the USNA handles small or large Scholarship dollars that a Mid will recieve would be helpful.
 
Get all the scholarship money you can!! When you get to I Day, your child will have an ACE loan taken out against them in the amount of approx. $8500. Any scholarship money sent to the Academy will pay off this loan a little faster and eventually you will see more $$ in your monthly pay.

You will not be able to accept FAFSA if you attend USNA. If you have an NROTC scholarship, it will be revoked when you sign the Oath of Office on I-Day.


Apply for as many scholarships as you can. It's free money. You WILL have expenses during your time here, and you will appreciate having some money saved up.

So, to be clear, you are saying I shouldn't fill out the FAFSA?
 
Absolutely fill out FAFSA

Filling out FAFSA is time consuming and hopefully unnecessary, but it should be done. Always be prepared with a plan B. If you are accidentally injured before I day and unable to report, you will need a civilian school plan (even if only for a year) so submit FAFSA.
