First off, sorry if these posts come up a lot, I am just wondering if anybody would be willing to give me an idea of where I stand.

I am applying to get an AFROTC scholarship and would like to know my chances. I have been researching a lot about the USAFA (applying there too), but after a lot of searching I could not find many concrete averages for GPA/PFA etc. If anyone could tell me if I am in the range for a scholarship that would be great. (Also what type of scholarship)

GPA (unweighted 4.0 scale): 4.0
Class Rank (weighted scale): #1/450
ACT: 34 (32R, 36M, 33W, 34S, 8 essay)
SAT: 2170 (2180 powerscore: 690R, 770M, 720W)
AP Classes (12 by end of year, but past scores): 4 world history, 5 USH, 5 Calc AB, 5 English Lit & Comp, 5 Chemistry, 5 computer sci
PFA: 91.8 (just did it in the cold and rain :( ... 51 pushups, 49 situps, 11:09)
Intended major: Aerospace engineering (mechanical if the school does not have aerospace).

EC's:
Key Club: 11/12th
NHS: 12th
Varsity Golf: 12th
Founded a science group. Students create engineering projects. 11th/12th
Compete in Programming Competitions: 11th/12th
Organized a book drive for an elementary school last summer (took whole summer)

Thanks!

Like kinnem said, your athletics are weak but your academics are great, and the fact you are a technical major helps as well. I think you have a good shot. Just curious, what schools are you applying to?

@kinnem I was talking about charts and averages for an AFROTC scholarship not the Academy, but thanks for the reply.

@S and H I'm applying to USAFA, MIT, Caltech, Stanford, UMich, Berkeley, UCLA, Univ of WA, Princeton, and Cornell

Yeah I was thinking the same thing in terms of athletics.
Where does my PFA fall?

I don't think AFROTC stats is going to be far of the Academy stats. Think about it. Most academy applicants also apply to AFROTC as plan B and they don't have the same geographic requirements.

EDIT: I do know for certain that the average stats for those who win NROTC in school scholarships (as opposed to high school scholarships) exceed the average stats for those who are appointed to the academy. That's the reason for my logic. My be correct, may not be correct, but it makes sense to me. I do think you have a shot.

Actually your ECs are going to be very weak since AFROTC does not include anything past 11th grade, thus basically you only have 3 things in it. The same holds true for the APs.

Your PFA is low for AFROTC standards. In AFROTC many don't want to go below 95. Our DS never went below 97. Yes, even in Jan. and yes, they take it in the cold and rain. Just saying you will want to keep training to hit the avg PFA.

Kinnem is correct the stats for AFROTC are almost identical to AFA appointments for Type 1 and 2. Type 7 is slightly lower. I remember that a few yes back AFROTC type 1 avg ACT was 31, if you look at the AFA profile the avg ACT is 30. I recall that for a 2 it was 29 and 7 it was 28.

Overall, I would say that your chances are strong, just not sure that due to the lack of ECs and the lower PFT your WCS will be high enough for a type 1. Remember a 1 is only given to the top 5% of all recipients, or in numbers around 45 in the nation out of an original pool of around 5000 applicants. I think you will get at least a 7.

The other thing to remember is that if you need the scholarship to attend the college AFROTC scholarships are really only guaranteed for 2 yrs. because if you are not given an SFT slot the probability of being dis-enrolled is high.

Good luck.

Where did the 91.8 number come from? I don't recall seeing anything like that on the sheet my DS filled out. I assume there is a chart to convert your scores? If anyone can point me to something like that I'd appreciate it!

There used to be a chart on Virgiia Tech's website.

With the weaknesses on the EC's and athletics, I would say you are competitive for a type 2 or 7. A type 7 can only be used at publics that will offer you in-state tuition.
The PFA is probably fine but the 1.5 mile run time is pretty slow (assuming male) and will need to improve if you get the scholarship.

You can find the PFA score tables online. If you google physical fitness assessment AFROTC on google it should be the fifth result. It is a pdf from Virginia Tech.

I just want to make sure I'm looking at the correct form. The one I found has the below information in it and takes into consideration a persons abdominal measurement.

1. Body Composition (abdominal measurement) = 20 points max
2. Muscular fitness components (1-minute Push-ups
and 1-minute Crunches) = 10 point max each or 20 point max total.
3. Aerobic component (1.5-mile run) = 60 points max

Thanks very much for the info.

Yes, the form is for the PFT that they will take in AFROTC rather than the PFA that they take for scholarship consideration.
