Hi everyone! I applied to USMA the minute it opened and SLE a few hours afterwards. Now, Im not sure what I should be doing as far as my nominations! Do I try to get an appointment with my MOC now or wait until Feb/Mar?I am still taking SAT/ACTs and working out twice a day and trying to attend Girls State. But I feel like I should be doing something...administrative. Im on my portal every day and tried to get in contact my Liason officer. I feel like I should be doing something more! please help! Thanks
 
Most nomination applications don't open until March/April or so, so for now it's just a hurry up and wait type of deal until we can do anything more with the actual application/noms themselves.
 
It says to contact the field force rep. What are you supposed to say to them/talk to them about this early in the game?
 
I talked to my admissions rep right away expressing interest. Then we got around to talking about his military career and time at West Point. Then about area admissions events and the like. I stayed in constant contact with him and asked him every question I had about anything. I now have formed a great mentor ship with him as he has been a source of great info about West Point and the process. He also checked my file status for me numerous times and talked to the RC for me. Field force reps are invaluable! Keep in touch with them.

Until you are an official candidate and your portal is open early-mid summer, there isn't much administrative stuff to do now. Use the timeline posted above. You should practice the CFA often, continue to do well in your classes, take the ACT/SAT as many times as feasible, work on your leadership/varsity athletics/community service aspects, and hang on for a year-long ride. Your MOC will post their nomination requirements on their websites, but many will have a pre-questionnaire/mailing list you can get added to, so you will receive timely info from their office. If you have any medical issues that are possibly DQs (asthma, previous surgeries, etc), talk to your doctor at your next appointment about your goal of attending USMA and any issues in your medical history.
 
Give him a call to introduce yourself. I believe my son may have been one of the first candidates locally to contact the FFR -- the FFR even mentioned that he appreciated the initiative. The FFR, it turns out, was also on the MOC nominating committee, so for my son, it worked out as a two-fer having a relationship with both the FFR AND someone on the nominating committee. When the WP interview took place here at the house, it sounded like two friends were getting together.

Here are a couple of suggestions:
A. If you do not have one already, create a resume. You are going need it, for your application and Plan B.

B. Start developing your plan B options - If you are committed to serving, begin to research ROTC, visit a college campus that has an ROTC program and meet with the PMS.

C. Connect with all of your congressional nomination sources, and check out their application requirements, particularly the letter of recommendation and essay requirements.

D.Teacher evaluations are part of the application process, how well does your current math, chemistry, physics or english teacher know you? Have given any thought as to when and how you will make the request? How much time do you plan to given them to respond?

E. Talk to your liaison officer, and seek out others who are or have attended the academy and research the expereince. Some grads will tell you "West Point is a great place to be from, not a great place to be at". Research your decision before you make it to insure you are not one of approx. 200 appointees each year that do not make it to graduation.

F. Others will tell you drive those SAT/ACT scores, and that is the single biggest thing you can do right now to improve your chances. These scores carry a significant amount of weight. If you are not where you need to be, find a tutor. My daughter took the ACT 7 times her score improved everytime.

This list should keep you busy for a couple of days. Good Luck.
