After lurking on this forum for so long I decided I needed to make an account to ask my own questions regarding SLE. I think that the application doesn't really allow for room to show who you really are, it looks like they just look at scores and sports; however, I was wondering if I should update my profile for a sport as I am going to be the captain and president of a sport and club when the season starts.
Also, do you guys think that a 1400 for a first time SAT (CR and Math) is decent for SLE standards?
Thank you

Always update your profile as soon and as often as you can!:thumb:

A 1400 on a scale of 1600 is a decent score, first time or not. Say you got 700 in CR and 700 in math, thats over the 50th percentile for those accepted to the academy. Typically, SLE participants get between 1200 and 1300 on the SAT.

So in summary, you look like a good candidate. Get your stuff in and hope for the best!

SLE and more....

Summer Leader Experience has many facets to it. Many colleges and universities have a summer program to attract students to join their program and the SA are no different. SLE allows those who are thinking about wanting to attend WP will apply in hopes of being accepted. You must remember SLE is nothing like being a cadet. It is just a small sample and you get to see what the post has to offer.

There are a few advantages attending SLE; You will take the CFA and have the opportunity to open your file a few months earlier. You will also be interviewed by a cadet which checks a box on your application. But you don't get any extra points for attending. Boy/Girls State does account for your WCS on your application.

The cadets that run the SLE are mostly second year cadets and this is their first command. And it is more competitive than getting into WP as a cadet.

Two things,

Many times in your life you will not be allowed to "show who you really are."

I will be very careful on how you update your profile based on future leadership positions you might hold. How do you know?

^^I agree with memberLG. Never put anything on your application you can not prove

I only know because I have already been selected before the season has started. I will leave it out and if I am not denied by April, then hopefully things will be official.
Thanks to everyone for the advice!

If you know for sure I would go ahead and put it. The leadership/extracurricular activities you list for SLE stay for your application to WP, and every little bit helps.

SLE isn't everything...

Just keep in mind that the selection process for SLE is not exactly like the selection process for an appointment.

My DS received an EA appointment to USAFA two weeks ago, and USMA last week, despite NOT being chosen for SLE at either school. People had various opinions about why he didn't get SLE including: SLE is looking for diversity, my husband was a grad so DS already knows quite a bit about USAFA, trying to get equal representation from all 50 states, trying to get people in other types of categories. So, it's hard to predict who will get in (and who won't) and why. DS had high test scores on both PSAT and PLAN, high grades, varsity sports, all the rest. In the end, it didn't matter as far as the appointments.

None of that is said to discourage, merely to point out that it isn't a cut and dry process, and also to remind everyone not to be too discouraged if you don't make it in.
