Why Air Force?

I've been appointed to usafa usna and usma. I have narrowed it down to usafa and usna. For those who were appointed to more than one service academy, what made you choose air force and why? I don't really know what I want to do in the service yet, but from what I hear the navy has a lot more opportunities and different jobs than the air force. Is this true?

It really depends. What do you want to do in the military, and what do you want to major in?

Most likely engineering and I'm hoping for aviation, but I know the navy has more options if I cannot become an aviator

Knew a cadet that inprocessed with DS a couple years ago that had the same dilemma. Accepted to the 3 SA. CAP commander, uber athlete-and so on and so forth...
Outprocessed after two weeks of BCT.
Regardless of what SA you pick, I hope it's really what you like and is the perfect fit for you.
Your monicker suggests you favor one over the other two.
Any of the three offer countless opportunities.
Good luck.

What makes you think the Navy has more options? As far as I know, that isn't true at all. The Air Force has plenty of AFSCs to pick from. I literally change my mind about what I want to do every day.

You should look over the Air Force Academy and Naval Academy catalogs. The entire thing. It provides information on every aspect of the academy plus careers and majors which pertains to your question.

It really depends on what you want to do in the service. I think Air Force really has a wide variety of options, especially in the STEM fields. I guess big difference in engineering is the type that you would want to do, aerospace or naval etc.

Although I'm partial to Navy (never served) I think you have your answer based on which forum you posted to without posting a similar question on the other. Happy flying! :thumb:

I have a little insight, as I retired as a Naval Aviator. My son is at USAFA, and will hopefully commission this spring. DS was in a similar situation. He choose USAFA. Not sure why my son selected USAFA over USNA, but I was happy with his decision. I felt the Air Force had better "back up" options than the Navy. After watching the AFSC assignments, I believe USAF does offer more options.

Both USAF and USN are wonderful options, with unlimited opportunity. I have been impressed with the aviation emphasis that USAFA offers. Sounds obvious. DS while at the academy has soloed in glider, soloed in powered flight, and working on his private license. Not sure the navy will have that type of aviation emphasis. I have said, "The navy would be a great organization if it did not have all of those ships".
As aviators, we like to think we are the top dog of the food chain. Remember, aviation in the USN is an after thought. Ships and Submarines come first, actually I think submarines are the primary emphasis.

I am not sure of the aviation opportunites at USNA, but I was impressed with the odds of a pilot slot a USAFA. I have also heard rumors of a "NUC draft"within the navy. You qualify(engineering major), you go Nuclear Power, based upon the "needs of the navy".

Look at both, ask questions. Follow your dreams. If it is your life long dream to fly at the boat, go navy. If you want to fly, the air force offers a great opportunity.

I would also think about your back up plan. What if you can not fly? Will you be happy with the remaining options?

Good luck!

I'm agreeing with this and I have to say it definitely looks like your heart is more than just leaning towards Air Force. Don't end up somewhere that was really your second choice. You might adapt, and you might get used to it and have some great experiences and better job opportunities, but honestly, in the back of your mind you'll still regret it for the rest of your life and wish you had the chance to go back and choose differently..

Cadet for a Day

I am in a similar dilemma as you. I received a Falcon Foundation Scholarship to attend a civilian prep school, but right now I am trying to decide between USAFA and USMA. My family is currently stationed at West Point. The struggle between choosing the correct has had me stressed for a while, but to help me in my decision I am doing the Cadet for A Day Program that I know the Academies offer. I will be staying overnight with a cadet and following them around for 24-hours. I had the opportunity to do that last year for an afternoon and it was very helpful because (at West Point) you follow a freshman. If you are in the position to do that program, I highly recommend it, plus, its free! Good luck in your choosing process, and who knows, maybe I'll see you at I-Day in June!
