Hello all,

I have a 3'Q + Nom + Medical waiver + CVW invite. According to the following paragraph from the USNA website, does this mean (statistically) that I have a 75% chance at gaining an appointment to USNA? That is what my BGO has told me. However, it seems that there is confusion as to how many people have a 3'Q + Nom. Is it 2000 or is it 4000?

"If you are found scholastically qualified but do not receive a Letter of Assurance, you will be competing for an Offer of Appointment from within your nominating sources. Approximately 2,000 candidates are found fully qualified (scholastic, medical, CFA, and have obtained a nomination) each year. Of that number, about 1,500 will receive appointments and approximately 1,200 become midshipmen. Most candidates will be notified of their final status by April 15."

Thanks

Normally no more than 2500 candidates are tripled qualified with a nomination. 4000 is a bit much.

Class of 2017 profile:

NOMINATING CATEGORIES
Presidential.................................................... 822
Congressional............................................... 5,103
Secretary of the Navy.................................... 366
ROTC/JROTC................................................. 122
Children of Deceased/Disabled Veterans.... 27

OFFERS OF APPOINTMENT
Men ............................................................ 1,075
Women............................................................ 333
Total .............................................................. 1,408

I was the one that said 4000 and I also said don't quote me on that. I'm sure I saw that the number of 3Q+nom is higher than 2000, but I can't find it. Maybe a BGO can weigh in...

And again, with USNA, until you are notified of your final status, no one really knows if they are 3Q.

My BGO told me that I was 3'Q. How would he know this? He also told me that I am part of the "2000". I am guessing this means I have a 75% chance?

That Should Not Be Happening

JohnPaulJones,

Your BGO should not be telling you this information. The 3rd. Q is kept close to the vest for the Academy to control. As I have understood it from prior BGO posts if BGO's continue to release this information they will no longer get the information. I'm confident you will see a more detailed answers as to why this is. For now, just sit back and enjoy the ride. As it has been said if your still in the game the majority of the offers will be released in Feb. & March.

Good luck...

Saw an admissions powerpoint that had it broken out as...

Scholastically qualified -- 2900 (this was in 06)
Fully qualified with nom -- 1900
Offers of appt -- 1500
Admitted -- 1200

Again the data presented is dated, but it should be in the general ballpark.

From what I'm told, the BGO should not have told you of your "3Q" status, but you know nonetheless. Having a CVW invite is a good indicator you are competitive for appointment -- which in general implies you are scholastically qualified.

In any event, trying to figure out percentages can be frustrating. When the smoke clears, there will be some highly qualified individuals that are in that void of 300-400 people between 3q'd + nom and OOA.

From what you have written, it seems like you KNOW you are triple-qualified. I was never told I was triple-qualified and I don't think I have heard of anyone else being notified either. Maybe your idea of "qualified" in one of the three categories just doesn't match what the admissions board thinks. The best of luck to you and just try not to stress!

Those numbers (2,000 Fully Qualified, which is 3Q'd + Nom and 1,500 offers of appointments) are really based off old data. Based on more up-to-date numbers, I'd estimate that the odds are more at or below 50%.

no way to really tell

'14 parent here ----everything you have said shows you have what it takes -but don't get caught up in stats or %'s. Every year there are different numbers admitted. Every year 3'qd perfect app/ nominations etc are turned down for one reason or another or admitted for one reason or another . There is NO formula to this one!!! Just keep doing what you are doing keep watching the mail and keep your hopes up. DS did not get his BFE until February. I know it's hard waiting but the next 4 years will be even harder and even with a slow admission process a long plebe year an even harder youngster year the ride goes faster than you expect it . Best of luck to you hope you get good news soon!

From the class of 2017's statistics, 1408 people were given their OOA's, but only 1200 became midshipmen. What happens with those 208 fully qualified students?

I believe those 208 accepted students are those who decline to attend the academy.

From what I'm told, the BGO should not have told you of your "3Q" status

Told by whom? In years past, the Admissions Board would send out Board Qualification Letters to candidates that were found to be academically qualified. It seems that they no longer do that. Currently, BGOs are able to see whether an official candidate has been found the be academically qualified. I am not aware of any policy that suggests that BGOs cannot share that information with their assigned candidates.

Are the 208 students that will be going to the prep school?

I wonder if the 208 students are students that will be going to the prep school? Or are the 208 students that will decline to attend the academy? If the 208 do decline are those spots for other candidates that did not receive an appointment?

1. No, you have to be 3Q+nom to get an appointment. Those eligible for NAPS are not 3Q.
2. The 208 are probably those that decline the appointment because they accepted somewhere else. Many candidates have appointments to more than one SA.
3. The SAs give out more appointments than spots available. Looks like last year they offered ~1400 appointments for ~1200 spots. It has been said on here before that appointments are sometimes handed out as late as June, but you should have your Plan B,C,D ready by then instead.

BGOs are told (and reminded numerous times) that they are not to tell candidates their board status. From October 2013:

BGOs shall not inform candidates of their board status. If a candidate requests his/her status you should tell them that an official decision has not been made yet. The official decision and notification will come from the Admissions Office by the end of April. If they aren't satisfied with that, you should direct them to call their Admissions Counselor.

It creates unnecessary work for the Admissions Counselor when a candidate is informed by their BGO what their board status is. Thank you for your attention in this matter.

COMom, thanks. What is it that you are quoting from October 2013?

Nevermind. I found the bulletin. I was looking in The Handbook. Thanks for letting me know.

DS will be among that 208 number this year, or whatever that number may be. Declining his offer to accept at USCGA. Go Bears!
