Hey,

I hope to become a Navy SEAL after the Naval Academy, but have a few questions for anyone willing to answer them. At the Naval Academy, are midshipmen allowed to use the pool and its facilities for open swims, workouts, etc.? Next, does anyone know what the SEAL screener at the Academy consists of? Also, can you be a member of both the sprint football team and the Special Operations Team? Thank you for your insight.

Yes. They're not open 24/7 (lifeguard is required), but they're available enough. SOT also runs swim workouts every Sunday evening; all Midshipmen are welcome to attend.

The rest I'll leave to those more knowledgeable.

Thank you very much for the information. It's good to know that the pool is available to Midshipmen. Is SOT a seasonal activity and do you need to tryout for it? I want to do both sprint football and SOT if possible.

I believe SOT is year round. It's basically an extracurricular activity that counts towards athletic time. And when I said tryout this is what I mean. A current Midshipmen told me that you basically show up to the club and then the club members vote on whether they want you part of the team after a few sessions. It's just like a real SEAL team. When you are first assigned to a SEAL team you have to work for the respect of the members. You have to show you are a team player and that you can be trusted in real combat. Again, this is what I have heard. Don't quote me on it.

There are weekly swim workouts as well as (mostly) daily PT sessions. Your focus should be on your grades and performance. It's good to have an early plan but way to early to be 100% into it, you have to get through Plebe summer, and you need to excel in all pillars for a special warfare slot at any academy

Oh, and to be honest, unless you are on the swim/water polo team, weekly swims will NOT cut it. Much of your physical prep will be done on your own time.

The mids created a spec ops team a few years ago and made Stew Smith (USNA Grad & Navy Seal) a volunteer coach. Contact him for more insight:

futuremid2018 is spot on. Your focus should be on grades and making it through Plebe Year. There will be literally 100s of young men who show up on I-Day who are determined they will be SEALs. They great part is about 30 will be (that is double from when I went there). The majority of your prep for screeners and other things will be done on your own. Hopefully you will have a good buddy that you can train with you. But screeners and other things like PT tests for record are generally all senior year. You should watch your upperclassman who are aspiring SEALs. The SEAL service selection interviews and service selection is a complicated process and your upperclassman who are trying to get this will know all this and educate you. SEAL officers will rotate every 2-3 years on the yard so who you start there will not be who is there for your screeners and selection.
