In need of advice! Wondering whether Girls State or NASS would benefit me more in the application process. I understand GS does add more points to candidate scoring but I'm wondering if this would make or break my application?
I will be visiting USNA for CVW in March but I'd also like to experience Summer Seminar if accepted. Please share any thoughts or opinions!

Go to both. :)

Seriously, shoot for both. If not, with a CVW, I would say pick whichever you want more if you can't do both. They obviously see something in you if they've offered a CVW so the points from girls state may not be needed.

Unfortunately the dates for summer seminar and girls state do overlap! I'm having a hard time deciding between the two. I think NASS would better suit my interests where girls state would be more oriented for strengthening my application.

There are 3 sessions of NASS. You can take the CFA there and you are "observed" in the NASS setting, but girls state is points on the WCS. It's your choice. Depends on what you think is best for your application.

My son did not get into NASS and went to Boys State instead and had no clue what it was all about. He ended up LOVING it. Fantastic week of memories and learning what kind of leader he was. Totally worth it.

Good luck!

I know you may not think GS is going to be that much of a good experience besides boosting your WCS, but if I had to choose again between seminar and Girls State, I would choose Girls State. Right when I walked into the interview, they told me directly that Girls State is looked at more favorably and of course adds points to your score. Now, if you think about it, if you don't receive an LOA and nomination or a principal nomination and qualification, or a presidential nomination etc, Girls State is going to boost that WCS, which helps your standing on the NWL. You want to be the best of the best on that list. You want to be their pick. The WCS algorithm is going to make or break you. A few extra points could be the deciding factor for the future.

Not to mention that Girls State was the best experience of my life, I made unforgettable friendships and lasting memories, and met so many wonderful girls like me interested in serving this country. Some had attended a seminar most did not.

But on the flip side if you've been accepted to the seminar, then you probably are very well qualified. Therefore, going to GS is not really needed for you. A lot of applicants don't attend Girls State, but get in. So it's up to you! (although I'm completely bias to GS but it's really up to you)

If you want to find out if the academy is right for you, go to the seminar. If you want to fall more in love with going to an academy and serving your country while meeting and friending amazing girls like you and being immersed in a life changing, empowering experience, choose GS.

I turned down NASS for Girls State. I had the time of my life, and was chosen as a senator to Girls Nation, where I was able to talk to my Senators and Rep about local issues (I slipped something in about my Academy app too ;))

I was also offered a CVW a couple weeks later.

I went to the AFASS, and although it was enjoyable, however, I would rather do Girls State several times over. I think it really helped my come to my feet as a leader, and the friendships I made are lasting. My BGO also said my participation in State and Nation REALLY helped out my file.

Have fun with whichever you do :)

You're thinking about this all wrong. It's not whether Girl's State will make or break your application; it's whether Girl's State will help your application beat your competition's application. Have no doubt about it. This is a competition.

I understand how competitive the application process is; I was just curious as to whether one or the other would weigh more heavily and/or place a more significant impact on my application. Right now I'm leaning towards Girls State. Others seem to have nothing but good remarks regarding the program!

GS!

I had the same conflict a few years ago, except it was between GS and NASS. I talked to a few cadets as well as some ALOs and their general consensus was that Girls State would be the better opportunity. Fortunately I was able to attend USAFASS, which allowed me to compare the two; basically Girls State is exactly what they describe to you in the pamphlets and things, and summer seminar is essentially a recruiting tool ,they're trying to sell you on the Academy experience. If it were me I would go to GS, I went and loved it, and then went back as a senior counselor! You can always schedule a tour of the Academy at another time!

I've applied for Girls State and if everything works out I'll be attending USAFASS and a volleyball camp the weeks following! :)
