My son was being recruited for swimming and got his congressional nomination. We were very excited until yesterday, when he received a letter from DoDMERB rejecting his app due to a arthroscopic knee surgery 5 years ago. Very simple surgery, nothing after, and his athlete performance was not affected at all - and it was 5 years ago. Well, his only chance now is a medical waiver. Anyone knows how that works and what his chances are?

I would recommend your son call the swim coach at KP and let them know what has occurred. The waiver review needs to be requested by the Academy. The Academy is known as the "waiver authority". If they want your son to attend, they will request a waiver review.
They (through BUMED and DoDMERB) may request an administrative remedial which involves collecting all his records, or a medical remedial (examination), or both.
This is not the end of the journey, just another hill to hump.

Thanks for the reply. They had asked for a remedial before the official DQ letter. The remedial was the operation notes from the surgery. My son contacted the coach and the coach gave him a number to call and said he was going to check about starting the waiver. In addition, I requested an appointment with his orthopedist on my own, to see if he can provide any more in terms of a current exam or statements. We want to stay hopeful, but there are so many hills ...

I think the key is the coach and his collaboration with Admissions. If you all can get a waiver moving, I suspect they will want a physical exam. If they do, DODMERB will send a detailed letter specifying exactly what they want and how they want it, down to the CPT4 code.
You may also want to call DoDMERB and see if you can access his records from his original DOD medical exam. The forums are ripe with initial exams that were bad for a host of reasons.
PS: The stated preference on our remedial was to use physicians under contract and coordinated through Concorde/DoDMEPS.

Waiver
KP requested a waiver on DS behalf the first week of December. They said we should hear something between the middle to end of January. Still waiting....trying to remain hopeful.
I also read on dodmerb site that USMMA doesn't send out letters for notification. So we are supposed to continually check the dodmerb site and USMMA site for updates. Checking daily....

Hang in there. Our son was a soccer player at Kings Point. He, too, was needing a medical waiver for admittance. Took awhile, but it came through. At that time medical waivers were handled by folks at the Naval Academy.
We actually visited the Naval Academy head doc during the process. He stated that the notes from his attending physician were VERY helpful in the process. In our case, a small heart murmur...which seems to me to be a much bigger issue than what your son faces.
Also...just about a month before Indoc he was kicked in the knee at soccer practice and had to have surgery for cartilage damage. Did just fine at Indoc, graduated in 2001.
All is possible...don't take "no" for an answer especially if the swim coach is working on your son's behalf.

Thanks. They are basing the decision on operation notes from 2008 and NOT from his DoD exam, which was surprising. DoD exam had determined his knee was normal. So we just saw the surgeon from 2008 again this morning, took additional X-rays that show knee is absolutely normal and we will try to submit as further evidence, along with a note from the surgeon.
We are trying to contact admissions about the waiver (coach told us to contact them and said he was going to start the process on their end too).
We are concerned with the timing of things. Do you know when is the absolute last day they can have the decision by to still be considered for Fall 2014 admission? I saw here that some applicants received their waivers too late.

My DS's LOA indicates that he needs to be fully cleared by 17 April or the LOA will be rescinded.
Medical Waivers are not given from KP, they are given from DOBMRB. Unfortunatly much of the time those seeking a medical waiver do not receive them. I will PM you. Best of luck to you.

That's when he found out that they were actually missing part of his application, his scores had not been submitted. He cannot check status online because he didn't start his app online and does not have a pin (we are checking on that too), so we had no idea. They told him that as soon as they received the missing info they would start the waiver immediately. We have not heard back from anyone yet about anything that we need to be doing on our part. DS is trying to be very independent and do everything on his own and it is driving me crazy!!!

Call the Admissions office. I talked to A very nice lady. She gave me my sons PIN number.
Waiver for psoriasis
Has anyone heard of someone getting a waiver for psoriasis? My son was diagnosed as a young child and no longer has any evidence on his skin. I was told by Admissions that they do not grant waivers for psoriasis. Has anyone been through the process?
