I know this is random, but if you do an "Academy Day" event or some kind of event back in your hometown, do you have to use a weekend pass or is it just an excused absence? My Congressman does an "Academy Day" even which is held at my school every year, and I was wondering how it works for the cadet they bring down every year.

If the MOC coordinates it through admissions, then it goes in as a special pass/trip section (not counted against the Cadet's regular pass). It has to be cleared through the chain of command and the dean and depending on the distance/timing of the event, the Cadet can miss a day of class. Airfare is typically paid for, but no other expenses (such as meals or hotel).

Just a side note to add to 845something's response....these events are typically only approved for upperclassmen.

I figured this. Just wondering. For 845something, my school holds the event on a Saturday morning, which allows the cadets from all SA's to fly down on friday, do the event saturday, and fly back either later saturday or sunday. A little background info for the reasoning for the question: My school is a relatively small private Christian school, and we have NEVER had a student go on to a service academy from there. I would love to come back sometime and get the opportunity to talk to the students about my journey and maybe influence some of the students into a fantastic college and career path. Every year we have cadets come that are from the area, but they are always from the surrounding high schools. It would be great if I could start a tradition at my school like the other schools have done. (usually every high school in the area send at least 1-2 students to a SA, mainly USMA because we live close to an army base) :thumb:

The Congressional Academy Day that you are referring to is held on a Sunday, as you know. We've been able to get a cadet for that event but you never know from year to year. My DS did it a couple of years ago and he flew in on Friday and left right after the Academy Day event was over. You might be asked to do another event on Saturday.

You also might consider signing up for CPRC (which requires approval by your TAC). For CPRC, cadets leave a few days early prior to Thanksgiving, Spring Break, and sometimes Graduation. During those days, you 'work' for Admissions by visiting schools, Scout troops, help with a practice CFA, meet with interested candidates from your area, and anything we can think of that gets you in front of potential candidates. My DS did this a couple of times. He visited several schools, spoke with JROTC units, visited the Veteran's home, was interviewed by a newspaper, interviewed on a radio show, and met with candidates. We aways try to get the CPRC cadets to visit their home high school. In your district, for CPRC - we work you hard, but my DS always enjoyed doing it.

Don't give up too easily. First, if a plebe is the only cadet from the Congressional district and/or one only cadet in good standing (i.e. at least 3.0 GPA and no disciplinary actions), his or her chances go up significantly. The Admissions office usually try to accommodate requests from MOC. If you think big and if feasible, ask your school to contact the MOC to co-sponsor the Service Academy Day.

As for CPRC participation, be a cadet in good standing and contact your FFR back home to sponsor you. My understanding of the CPRC is that the Admissions Office generate the list and the Dean/Comm approves it. When the Admissions Office generate the CPRC list, they ask feedback from the FFR if we want sponsor CPRC cadets. If FFR says no, very little chance of a cadet participating in the CPRC.
