Nominations

I was nominated to West Point by my senator. My representative did not nominate me because I had already received a nomination. Appointments to USMA have started to go out and I have not yet received one. My question is, was I screwed over by only being nominated by my senator? I know of someone who received a nomination by the same senator and was admitted. Have I been put on the National Waiting List or something since senators/reps can only have 5 cadets at USMA at a time?

It is way too early to be "screwed over". Most appointments seem to go out end of Feb/beg. of March. You will know one way or another by April. Until, then, just keep working on your resume and PT. As long as you have a nomination, you are in the hunt.

Good luck!

Yeah you're right. I just got my appointment in the mail! I was just starting worry.

1. I would never use the phrase, or have the attitude that I was "screwed over". You got a nomination and you have a shot.
2. You have absolutely no idea how many nominations the person you know who was nominated by your Senator had. You also have no idea to whom his or her appointment was charged. They might very well be charged to another nomination. Or if, in fact, you do know, then the better man won off the slate and you'll have another chance on the national waiting list.
3. You are not the only person who didn't get a nomination from one MOC because they had a nomination from another.

Frankly, with that attitude, I wouldn't want to serve under you. Hopefully it was just a poor choice of words.

Not to pile on too much however, one of the greatest values of this forum is providing a little guidance or wisdom if at all possible. Agreed with kinnem hoping 'screwed over' was more of a poor choice of words rather than a statement of your character. The reason I say this is your word choice shows more of an entitlement attitude rather than one of service. Know you are reaching for West Point to be a leader of others...you are not entitled to anything. As a leader you need to earn everything. Also, think of the number of others who are working every bit as hard as you are to gain appointment and the number of others who have a competitive application who were unable to secure a moc nomination. One last comment, pressure is no excuse for poor judgment....for a truly great leader...pressure brings out the best in them. Okay...jumping off the soap box now. You have made it this far which means you are an extremely impressive young person with impeccable character. Be very pleased with your nomination and how far you have come so far. So take a few deep breathes, relax and know you are in the same position as about 1000 outstanding young men and women as you are all playing the waiting game till that bfe is delivered. Best of luck to you!

Congrats on your appointment, but I suggest you read over Kinnem and JWP's posts a few times between now and R-day.

+1, I agree 100%

I did not mean to come off as entitled. I still am not fully clear on how the nomination process works which was the source of me saying "screwed over." My understanding of it is that MOCs can only have 5 cadets at USMA at a time but nominate 10 each year, so not all of them will receive appointments if they are not the most competitive on the list of 10 sent in to USMA by the MOC. The implication was that while I was nominated by a senator, which is definitely an honor, I was not "winning" the nomination and was going to placed on the National Waiting List. Clearly this was a premature assumption (mainly because the application window still has a month before closing), and I think it is wrong altogether. My representative did not nominate me because he wants to send the most people to academies from our state as possible and I had already received one from my senator.

In short, I was seeing it as it was a great honor and accomplishment to be nominated by a senator, but being nominated by my representative would have guaranteed me an appointment (as a was triple qualified).

You are right. You don't understand the nominations. You would not have been guaranteed just because you got 2 noms. It doesn't work that way.

The point is moot since you have your appointment, but tread lightly. My nephew was at USAFA 15 years ago. He showed up with a pretty big ego....suffice to say, his first year at the academy was much harder than the humble doolies.....

The point was that I thought I would be competitive enough to be at the top of the applicants nominated by my representative, not that two nominations guaranteed me an appointment. I'm not being arrogant, I'm being honest. I do appreciate all of the advice that you and the others on this thread have provided me with.

You do know it's possible to be honest and arrogant at the same time, right? Just because your honest it doesn't mean you're being humble or anything.

Eagle7, EAT your slice of HUMBLE pie, LICK your WOUNDS and be GRATEFUL for the advice offered in this thread. (practice these words, "No excuse, Sir/Ma'am"!) Congratulations on your appointment to West Point and GOOD LUCK!

Hey I know how you feel. I only have the Presidential nomination to West Point (my dad Is active duty) while I have my congressional and presidential nominations to USAFA. My parents, ALO, and the dean of my prep school told me, because I was worried that one nomination wasn't enough, that it just takes one nomination to receive an appointment.
