Rather new to forums, (boy do I wish we knew about these oh so helpful threads in DS soph/junior year!), & have learned a lot in these past 2 months from all of you. DS checked his USMA portal late last night and noted nomination attributed to NY 61. I'm assuming this is Senator Schumer? We had not received prior notification so this was a huge and long awaited surprise. Check your portals and good luck!

I checked that I had Schumer as well, but it appeared twice. And Schumer does not take care of the 61 district, another senator does. I assume it is Schumer but I was confused about the 61 and why there are two of the same.

The "6" refers to Senator (vs Congressman/district). There is some debate on this forum about whether the "1" and "2" after the "6" refer to the senior and junior Senators, respectively.

Jackiejyp - do you have 2 nominations from your MOC? Could be why it's listed 2x.

We actually got letter Sat afternoon from Senator Schumer's office confirming a competitive nomination. I guess the WP portal beat out snailmail in this instance. Either way,we'll take it!

@ca2midwestmom I received a letter for a competitive nomination from Senator Schumer like sprintmom, nothing about another nomination. But 61 twice would mean Senator Gillibrand and Senator Schumer then?? Senator Gillibrand already sent me a letter a while ago saying no so I'm confused.

I'm just worried because I already received an appointment and these two nominations could go to other outstanding deserving candidates.

No, not necessarily.

Don't worry about it. And again, not necessarily. If you received more than one nomination, it was because your MOC thought you deserved them.

Congrats!

Congratulations, Jackie! My DD has the same situation-already had other nom and an appointment, then Sen Schumer's nomination appeared 2 x's on the portal and the letter came in the mail. Very strange, especially after she notified his office-as he requested-about her other nominations, but still a welcome surprise!

Oh ok! Thank God! Congrats to your DD--is she on the Facebook group yet? PM and I will be glad to add her! :) can't wait to talk to her! Congrats to you and your family!!

I wanted to ask if NY61 appears twice what does that mean, that we got two nominations from Senator Schumer? Or slated in two spots? Just curious cause my county paper will ask.

Honestly, I don't know the answer, but I suspect the double entry is a technical error. I don't think you can have 2 noms from the same source, at least not to the same academy. Maybe it should be a question to the FFR?

I just asked my FFR and he said it's two nominations from the same source. Really weird I'm going to clarify and call Senator Schumer tomorrow and will post here.

Not unusual at all. Your Senator had 2 slots open. He/she can nominate 10 people per slot. Many MOCs will put candidates on both slates resulting in candidates with 2 noms from one MOC.

Buff81, thank you for your response. That is very interesting. It still seems odd to me, though, because this senator's application packet made such a point of noting that candidates could only apply to 1 academy (through him), that they must report any other nominations rec'd, and that if they did receive a nom from another source, their names would be removed from his list in order to give as many others as possible a chance. After the interview, the coordinator's last words to my daughter were that DD should email her if she rec'd any other nom, and so she did. After all of that AND an appointment (which I would think the senator must know about), he offers at least two candidates in the same situation 2 nominations each?? Believe me, I don't mean to sound ungrateful and of course I believe my DD is deserving, but I still don't get it.

Hard to say why a specific MOC puts one candidate on 2 slates. The reason that I am most familiar with is that he might not have had 20 candidates to put on the slates or that he wanted to put on the slates. If he had less than 10, he could have turned in 2 slates with the same candidates on both. If he had more than 10 but less than 20, he could have duplicated the some candidates, possibly because they were the most competitive.

I believe that MemberLG sits on a Congressional nom board. Maybe he will pipe in and give more insight.

I think it is safe to say that if your DD's MOC slated her twice, then he thought she was deserving also to give her not just one nom, but two ! :thumb:

Fwiw, DS reports that NY 61 appears twice on his portal as well. I just assumed it was an inputting error. This is a confusing process!

Jackiejyp7, were you able to reach Sen Schumer's office? DD's FFR did not have any answers, just said that it was all good. It does appear that the senator put forth the names of least three candidates on two separate slates. I'm just so curious about the disparity between the info on his website/application about only getting one nomination and what seems to actually be happening. DD said, "Well, he is a politician, after all!" :yllol:
