Hello, I am a Junior in high school in Tennessee. I have a 28 ACT and around a 3.75 GPA. I've been in AFJROTC for nearly 3 years. I'm on the varsity football team and have performed many hours of community service. I have a few questions for anyone that's is willing to answer them.

1) Do I have a decent chance of receiving any scholarships in any of the three programs? If yes, which of them?
2) Are there any schools near Tennessee that have a past of having their cadets commissioned in the area of Engineering or Special Investigations?
3) Which schools should I apply to? Can I apply to all of them? Is there anything else I should be applying for?
4) When I visit schools for visits this upcoming Spring and Summer Break what type of questions should I be asking the detachments?
5) Is there anything I can do to enhance my chances of receiving a scholarship in any of the three areas?
6) If I achieve the grades, would receiving full tuition interfere with obtaining other scholarships?
7) Do any of the programs include room&board with their scholarship?

Sorry for all of the questions...
Thanks for your time and considerations!

1) Yes you have a good shot, at least at receiving an Army scholarship. If your major is Engineering, the AF and the Navy may give you a shot as well.

2) The school has nothing to do with your commissioning. Pick a school that has a program you're interested in, and that you feel you can do well at. I would assume a school like UT would have big ROTC units.

3) You can apply for any school your interested in, but you can only list up to 7 on your scholarship applications. They will then give you a scholarship to one (or more) of the seven you listed.

4) Visiting schools is a great idea. Whenever I went on a visit, I made it a point to stop by the armory or ROTC building and meet with one of the cadre. Try to call ahead and see if you can schedule a meeting with the head of the battalion or recruiting officer.

5) Raise the ACT score. Seek out leadership positions. Join clubs that you can and keep up the grades/community service.

6) If you get a full tuition scholarship from a school, but still want to do ROTC, I would advise using the ROTC scholarship. It's the only thing that guarantees you a contract with the military and "reserves your spot" in the AF/Navy/Army.

7) Some schools do. You can check their battalion websites OR look at the "Room and Board" thread at the top of this ROTC forum.

Thoughts...

Governor15,

You noted that your ACT was a 28. One can only assume that it the comp. That said what was your math and veb numbers? NROTC will look at the math and verb not the comp. Class rank plays a bigger part than your GPA. If you haven't done so already take the ACT again as well as the SAT. In the math and verb your in good shape if your in the 30 range.

It has been said so many times on this forum you will never know your chances unless you apply.

In regard to schools: NROTC wants you to apply for an in-state school if listed. Your state has the University of Memphis for NROTC so it will need to be on your list of choices unless you have some very good reason for not applying. Given that you have a 28 comp and what that schools looks for you should get in but again one cannot give a solid chance. The UofM ACT cop range is 20 - 26.

You started your research which is good now dig deeper. Look on the NROTC web page, pick up the book on how to be awarded the ROTC scholarship, research, research, research... Contact you area cordinator for NROTC and start hammering them with your questions. Go for it and see where it takes you in the end.

One question... Have you thought about the service academy at all? Many kids that apply go with the ROTC & SA applications. If you have not given it thought just take a min and see what they have to offer.

Good luck...:thumb:

AFROTC does not super score like A/NROTC. It is best sitting. Your college choice does not mater. You major does.

Engineering is tech, I assume Special Investigations is non-tech for AFROTC, big differencereagrading a scholarship.

AFROTC only pays tuition. Read your merit scholarship to see if they allow merit for R & B.

I suggest you go to www.AFROTC.com

My son is an MS IV at Vanderbilt. He is not an engineering major, but his roommate and several fellow cadets are. Vanderbilt is not a big program, but its graduates do very well. Last year over 50% were an overall E at LDAC including my son who will also be a Distinguished Military Graduate and AD in Mil Intel. He is the BN commander of the Go Gold Batallion this semester. Vanderbilt kicks in $6000/year toward room and board. My son also had a Pell Grant and an outside scholarship. Vandy also pays for any costs over the demonstrated financial need with free aid, not loans.
I would agree with the previous poster regarding your ACT score. Your stats and experience are similar to my son's except he was 33 ACT.
If you would be interested in talking to my son, I can probably help facilitate that.

Good Luck!

Hi Governor. My son is from Tennessee and chose Texas A&M. If engineering is your interest, they have a great engineering program. When we toured the school, my son was very interested in the Corps Of Cadets. They have a program where you can fly out to the school and spend the night with a cadet. You do everything the cadets do, including attending a class.

The advice we were given while my son was on his journey to obtaining a scholarship was to excel in academics, leadership, and sports.

If you aren't elected to a leadership position, then think about making something happen by stepping up and creating a program or leading an event. As an example, my son founded the debate team at his high school. I believe they want to see that the person is well-rounded and can excel in the various categories of sports, leadership, and academics.

Also, take the ACT as many times as possible. My son increased his composite score by 4 points from the first time he took the test in 10th grade to the last time he took it at the beginning of 12th grade.
