I received a letter in the mail from the Naval Academy admissions board informing me that I have been selected to attend the Naval Academy prep school. I did get the feel that I might be offered admission to prep school possibly due to the fact that I am a year younger than all of my senior peers or maybe that I require more academic preparation.

I only have two weeks to decide so I suppose I am in a bit of a predicament. I have a LOA from West Point and a prep school offer from Naval Academy. What are some reasons as to why one academy might feel I am LOA worthy where as the other wants for me to attend prep school? I hear prep school grads enter the academy with a leg up as they have already been exposed to the rigors of midshipmen life, not to mention that they have a support network once in the academy. What are some advantages or disadvantages of attending a prep school as opposed to accepting an outright appointment to WP?

Any and all help is appreciated! I have a lot of thinking to do.

You are confusing yourself with extraneous situations. You have a golden ticket to either USNA or WP. What do you want to be when you graduate? A Naval Officer or an Army Officer? Make a choice and take that road.

+1 Spud. Figure out where you want to end up and that will help you decide where to start!

Good luck!

I suspected those would be the answers I got. That just about sums it up, thanks.

Accept whatever offer to an SA or ROTC you wish; you do have the latitude to change your mind, just keep people advised on a timely basis.

Were you being recruited for a sport? Are your test scores or GPA a bit lower than the averages of those who get in? It could be that USNA wants you to physically mature so you'll be better at sports a year later. Follow your heart on this and accept NAPS and if you get the appointment to USMA and would rather take that, then decline the NAPS position and they'll pull someone off the waitlist to attend.

No I am not being recruited for a sport although I did plan to walk-on for football or play sprint football first year then walk-on second year. My test scores are about average I suppose - 690 verbal and 620 math. Although I believe I passed the CFA I did not do too well, so that might be a factor.

All that aside, I'm just glad I have been given the opportunity to choose between two great institutions.

Search your heart. As far as Naps , you do have a leg up on the direct admids.
You do get paid when you are at Naps also. Pay goes down significant, once you get to the SA's. I guess you really have to ask what it is you want to do? Do you want infantry? Fly planes? I think the Naval Academy has more choices. Then again West Point, just the sound of it makes me shiver. Grant, Eisenhower ,Patton and Stonewall Jackson! Are you kidding me! I wish we all had choices like you do:thumb:

My DD Company Mates that came out of NAPS were the best. Helped all their Company through the first few weeks. Newport can be a pain for the weather and most hate it. Not a bad place for liberty in dress whites down Thames Street.
