Accessing Medical Corps

Hello everyone,

I'm an MSI this year and am really enjoying the ROTC experience. I'm wondering if anyone here can answer my question about the accessions process.

How does the process work for a branch like the Medical Specialist Corps where there are several officer MOSs? Specifically, I'd like to be a physical therapist. I know that usually medical officers are already in their field or fresh out of a undergraduate program and then commission, as opposed to going the ROTC route.

I'm planning on contacting the Baylor PT program (Army, AF and I believe Navy all run their PT programs there) to see if they have any information, as well as talking to my senior NCO. I figured asking in several places would be the best way to get the most information. Thanks for the help!

I have no solid info on this so I'll leave it up to those you contact in the know, just be aware that the Medical Corps and Medical Service Corps (I'm assuming thats what you meant by Medical Specialist Corps) are two separate branches.

There is a Medical Service and a Medical Specialist Corps. I thought the term Medical Corps was all encompassing for the six different corps, but I see now it is its own corps. The umbrella term I was looking for is AMEDD.

Also, this is for the Army and Army ROTC. Excuse me for not specifying that earlier!

You can request educational delay when you access. If it is granted you can attend medical school instead of going on active duty right after your undergraduate. Note that I said you can request. That implies that the Army can deny that request and require you to serve immediately. I've been in this business for ten years, and this year was the first year I had a Cadet request Ed Delay. He is going to Law school next fall.

Thanks for the reply. I knew about education delay for lawyers and future doctors. Can a cadet request education delay for any other graduate program? With the understanding that you may not get your request, of course.

Yes but in actuality it only really applies to law and medical. I believe PT (DPT) falls under that. As other have said PT falls under Medical Specialists which includes OT, PAs, dietitians etc. GRADSO is the term you are looking for to guarantee grad school LATER on. Ed delay applies immediately after commissioning.

GRADSO

I don't think GRADSO's are available anymore, at least that is what my HRA told me when I went through accessions counseling. Therefore I did put GRADSO down which was my first choice of ADSO. I could be wrong but that was the guidance i was offered.

Sorry, I misunderstood your original post. I thought you were talking about assessing into the Medical Specialist Corps immediately following ROTC which is where I stated that there were only 2 branches (of the medical fields minus nursing) where that is possible, Medical Corps and Med Service Corps. My bad if I threw you off, Medical Specialist Corps is most certainly a branch that is comprised of those with certain advanced degrees (such as PT). Of which, I know very little about since I'm not majoring in anything medical related. Good luck :thumb:
