This is the official knowledge book. I don't recommend memorizing it all, but get familiar with things that are tricky and that stump cadets. some of those are:

Cadet rank insignia
Enlisted/ officer rank
Schofields definition of discipline
the soldiers creed
hows the cow
the days ----know this one
reporting procedures
saluting procedures.

Don't be "that guy" that knows it all like the back of his hand on R day, but a little bit of reading helps alot.

My tips for beast:

-other than looking over the knowledge, relax and enjoy you last few weeks...it comes fast.

-yes, knowing/ studying knowledge during beast SEEMS like the most important thing in the world, but the priorities should go like this:
1) health
nothing during beast is worth getting injured over, push yourself, but don't be stupid. I tore a ligament in my ankle week 3, and decided that doing land nav, ruck marches, and runs on it was a good idea....had to have surgery. Don't be like me.
2) sleep
sleep is more important than studying that knowledge book for 3 hours under red light or trying to shine your shoes, you need the rest.
3) being a good sport.
have fun, everyone is learning during beast, roll with the punches.

Pack light on R day, they issue you mostly everything (if you want the full list, email me and I'll send it to you) I recommend literally:
-broken in boots
-very very broken in low quarters
-some comfy spandex, black
-small fan 6"
-stamps
-feminine stuff if you need it (girls, pack some sports bras and extra underwear, and tons of hair supplies)
-a good multitool
-head lamp with red light feature

anything else is too much in my opinion. They issue shampoo, tooth brush, toothpaste, foot powder, soap, socks, underwear (they aren't that bad..), shoe wax, and anything else you could think of. I saw someone show up with nothing in hand, and they turned out okay.

****important****
you parents can send you packages. I sent myself one 3 days before R day, with my favorite shampoo, body wash, some duct tape (so valuable) and tons of bobby pins and hair bands (ladies), they can send packages all through beast as long as it doesn't have contraband.

The more you carry in on R day, the more miserable you will be. I had about 10-12lbs of stuff, and with everything they issue, I had about 40-50bs on my back for the whole day. Others who brought in a huge duffle were suffering.

-remember that not everyone comes to west point to be a ranger. So when a classmate falls behind in something you think is "too easy", go back and help them. Jokes, remarks, and comments are not necessary and look bad on you.

-laugh at the stupid stuff.
west point continues to amaze me with memos/rules that don't make any sense. All you can do is laugh and do it, everyone has to.

The biggest thing:
Beast is only 6 weeks of your life. Some people love it (not many) and most hate every minute. it is less than 1 percent of your military grade at west point, so don't be upset if it doesnt turn out the way you want.

Anyways, I hope it helps, post questions here and I will try to answer best I can.

:yllol::yllol::yllol::yllol::yllol::yllol::yllol: :yllol::yllol::yllol: hahahahah!

Seriously though, you will have plenty of time to memorize knowledge, specially in the first weeks. Do not worry too much about knowing it beforehand, though no one is stopping you. Really, do NOT come knowing the entire knowledge book - that will NOT look good!

Come in shape, ready to push yourself! I ran in the green group (fastest running group) during Beast... for someone who pretty much didn't do any running in High School, it was HARD... but I improved a LOT and I learned a lot about how much I can push myself!

And, of course, make sure you pack a big amount of sense of humor - you'll need it :) Try getting your friends/family to send you news and jokes on the mail! It was really helpful for me :)

Remember that Beast is not so much about yourself becoming a cadet, but about the upperclassmen testing and improving their leadership skills. That being said, you can make Beast as hard as you want it to be - so PUSH yourself, specially physically (but DON'T BE STUPID! Don't get hurt!). Again, Beast is as hard as you make it. I recommend playing it on Hard, if you can take it!

Best of luck! Who knows, maybe I'll be a SAF member's Team Leader during the Academic Year :)

haha I was wondering who would catch my joke.

She walks, she talks .....
I could never get it right...

but I second the knowledge book thing- it won't look good if on the first day you're passing off the first 4 weeks. Play it smart, make beast fun.

and..... pew pew pew

:guns6:

Thanks for the advice!

From everything I have heard I agree and would like to pack as light as possible. With that being said the packing list that was posted to our candidate portal only said that these items would be issued:
Toiletry Items:
Deodorant-1
sewing kit-1
soap-4
soap box-1
brown towels-1
white towels-4
washcloth-3
brasso cleaner-1
shampoo-1
black shoe polish-2

Also, the suggested packing list included toothbrush, toothpaste, etc.

Could this mean what they have decided to issue this year has changed or will issue more items than they have told us about?

Thanks again for all the great advice.

My understanding is that fewer items will be issued this year in comparison to prior years. In light of the fact that most kids bring their own favorites for toothpaste, conditioner (girls) etc., it just makes sense to limit what will otherwise be tossed or go unused. Use this year's packing list as guidance.

Sorry to resurface an old post, but can anyone define what they consider contraband for beast?

Anything the CoC says is off limits, to include, but not limited to alcohol, tobacco, CANDY, supplements, electronic devices like phones, anything that can bring you pleasure, enjoyment, etc is considered contraband.

Such a good post thanks

I don't know it's a contraband or not (probably not).

Something I am recommending to take to Beast.

On a side note, learning how to sew might be nice too. I saw the sewing kit on the list of issue items, but useless if you don't know how to use it.

Push Hard, Press Forward

On my candidate visit in October, my plebe guide told me that it would we wise to bring a small/medium fan.

On Packing List....

You will be given a packing list of things. One thing you are allowed is 6" fan. No bigger. After A-Day have your parents bring you a big box fan.

Push Hard, Press Forward

Commander Dave, you will definitely want that 6" fan! The summers at West Point are VERY hot and humid! Last summer was so bad that Cadre allowed New Cadets to purchase the large box fans during BEAST.

DS was there last summer for a sports camp during that extremely hot time period. They had to keep the windows closed, doors open and fans on. A fan is a definite!

Any thoughts on if I can bring retainers that I wear while I sleep?

There was something about retainers in the admit kit on the portal, if I remember correctly it said that you had to tell em if you needed a retainer, but I'm not sure
